Chairman's Lounge. Invite only and you obviously don't have one - sorry!

Yes, invite only.

Membership of the CL is limited to 7,500 members, who it is understood are all signed off on and approved by QF's Chairman of the Board. Members are generally captains of industry; prime ministers, premiers and cabinet members past and present; and commercially important pax including C-Level executives of high yield QF corporate customers (after recommendation by their QF account manager).

The only way you could gain access is as the guest of a CL member per the lounge access rules.

A quick search of the forum will yield additional information you may wish to know.

It is the Chairman's Lounge, although even Qantas themselves occasionally call it the Chairman's Club. It is by invitation only.

Qantas don't publish the criteria for who gets the invites. I believe the following positions consistently get invites. Senior state politicians (in cabinet/ministry also their shadows). Also it seems that if they were in cabinet/ministry, but are now outside of cabinet/ministry they still keep their CL membership as long as they were re-elected. All elected federal MPs/Senators. Mayors and Lord Mayors of large cities. Also it seems the spouses/partners of the preceding also get membership. If they are not re-elected in most cases they will drop down to platinum once their CL membership has expired, although on a case by case basis some seem to retain it once they have left office.

At least some foreign diplomats based in Australia are members of the CL, for example I know the British High Commissioner is given membership. I would suspect other ambassadors/HCs of other countries would get similar, in particular those of countries that Qantas flys to. I also expect that some Australian HCs and ambassadors overseas would be given membership. A few senior academics get membership (I know of one university professor and one chancellor who have membership). There are some senior public servants. There have been reports of union leaders being given access.

And then you have business leaders typically ones who have a big spend with Qantas.

I believe senior members of the judiciary also get it e.g. High Court and Federal Court judges

My mate is one, he is a senior flyer only. Influential decision maker and man about town.

GM's of one construction business were invited as they shared some board representation with QF.

Is not as snooty as one would be led to believe.

Well it can't be that exclusive. Are any members of the exclusive AFF?

From the few times I have been guested in, it seems like it is mainly older (40+) white men, much like the business lounge. Although I do know that one CL member is female-to-male transgender person. When I was first told I thought the guy who was telling me was making joke or insulting the person, but actually turns out to be real.

I think at times membership must extend to family members beyond partners as well. I was on a flight the other day with one definite CL member (Senator Hansen-Young), and noticed her getting extremely personal service from the crew (e.g. she was asked for a drink and meal order privately, before the trolley round started). There was also a high-teens/early-20s female on board, and she got exactly the same personalised service as the senator - so my assumption was she was also a CL, presumably thanks to Daddy ;)

Yes, and you met one the same night you met me. ;)
And we're all having lunch together in 8 weeks ... (it's not really a secret, just having fun)

And I am looking forward to it.

As a CL I can confirm that the lounge is nothing amazing but is a nice alternative to the QP or J lounge. If the FLounge and DOM J lounge had a kid it would be the chairmans lounge. There was talk that we would get a sit down restaurant but nothing has materialised. My job position is in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and I have been a member just under a year or so. The biggest benefit is having access to a First Host even in economy. It is great for expediting procedures etc. Also AA and BA seem to reciprocate CL benefits. For example, my QF F Host handed me off to an AA rep upon landing who took me to the Flagship lounge in T4 and then to my gate. Its really the little things that count. They also can remember your favourite drink order so when you board (at least in F) they have it all ready to go. When in Y I have been given J pj's and amenity kit. Luckily, with CL thats not that much of an issue as upgrades flow easily.

Otherwise known as the 'Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade', colloquially DFAT.

I think I would have to buy air tickets rather than run purely on QF points. After 3 years of points only I don't think that I need to take a step back into the old way of organizing travel using bought tickets.
