Qantas Cabin Baggage Survey Results Email

I like the idea of some lounge lizards having their "carry-on" randomly checked on entering their lounge. Patrons should not be unduly inconveniced as potential offenders would be easily identified by lounge staff.

i just put both bags up I thought that was normal ? Or sometimes check in my carry on bag with my other suitcases .
Hmm no, the "personal" item was always meant to go under the seat, if it was your additional item. I think each passenger should only have one item in the overhead bin, and this should not include jackets, hats and shopping bags.

….

As for a large handful of people who worry about the airline losing their bag altogether, this is surely such a rare occurrence it needs no consideration
Qantas mishandles 4.6 bags per 1,000, small but not that small for it not to be worth considering.

I read some stat that worldwide, 7% of mishandled bags are never recovered.

Most of us don’t like checking bags because it adds 30-40mins at the other end while Qantas’s outsourced baggage handlers plod along and handle the bags of other airlines first.

Arrived business class from Brisbane on Tues into Sydney. Flight arrived 10 mins early then took 50 mins to get checked bags.

Seems perfectly fair to me. Sick of huge bags blocking boarding passengers. Just pay. I do have a small CPAP Machine that must accompany me. Never had a problem.

Until you are one of the unfortunate one that has their bag not carried on a Qantas domestic flight on a business trip, for unknown reasons, and not returned for 3 days. Makes life very difficult.

I agree there needs to be a crackdown on carryon baggage. I have seen bags bigger than the bag that I checked in carried through the plane and then hammered into an overhead compartment. Some so rigid they can't adapt to the space. We spent much time flying over the past month in Australia and Europe and had significant delays because the carry on could not fit into the overhead compartments.
First class travel is rarely a problem but flying Business to Auckland last month, we couldn't believe what people would bring onto the plane. The smaller planes allow customers to walk from the front to the rear. We were seated in row 1 and had one girl walk past with so much baggage whilst eating McDonalds, that she dropped chips so that everyone could then crush them into the aisle. While her milkshake, held at an angle, fell into my lap. So much for premium seating and comfort. It's just common sense to limit the number of carryon to fit the plane's capacity. Then there are the safety issues.

Why can't they just check your carryon at time of check-in. It doesn't even need to be exact (so it won't take long) - I'm sure the staff would get a good idea if the passengers carryon looks roughly right. The main idea would be to pickup the culprits that have excessive carryon. It always annoys me when they check at the gate which takes a long time & passengers generally can't do much about it at that point so they have to take it away, etc.
I'm sure have seen some airlines check at time of check-in & they put a tag of some sort on it. If its too big they check it in & if that puts you over weight you pay for it.

Love your optimum gaz1. With self check-in becoming the norm " check-in checks" are becoming less likely.
I remember years ago at Don Muang Airport in Bangkok, check-in baggage was x-rayed and plastic strip banded prior to actual check-in. Of course those security checks at most airports are now conducted post check-in. My suggestion would be to weigh all check-in baggage prior to reaching a check-in counter/machine. Who hasn't been stuck in a check-in Q waiting for a person or persons having to reorganize there baggage because it was found to be over weight.
And yes, some airlines do check carry ons. I recently traveled to Fiji for a weekend on a FJ " Lite" fare (carry on only). My backpack was weighed to ensure it did not exceed 7kg.
As for onboard luggage, perhaps it's time for airlines to consider allocating overhead locker space to a corresponding seat below ? Yes, I know that would be not without problems.....just a thought 🤔

Was on an AA A321T transcon on monday. Front row of J with bulkhead.
The bin above my seat was already full when I got there (with no one else in the other seat under it yet). Someone had dumped their bags in the first bin they saw even though it wasn't near their own seat. Had to find other bins to put my bags in.
Had that experience in Australia too. People seated at the back don't want to carry their bags down the aisle 😠

Recent SYD - MCY flight on QF, late departure (not unusual). Cabin crew doing final walk-through before take off. Passenger in first row of Y had large bag at his feet, protruding into the aisle. Flight attendant asked him to put it in the locker. Except it didn't fit. Not because the locker was full but because the bag was too tall for the locker. Boy, you should have seen him and the flight attendant trying every which way to get this bag stowed all while the aircraft is gaining speed for take off! Regardless of weight, that bag was way over the size limit for QF carry on.

The difficulty is that a large percentage of passengers are braindead idiots who are incapable or uninterested in following basic rules.

It should honestly be 1 item only, I'd even support removing all carry-on that won't fit under your seat.

I guess you fly Jetstar, Ryanair and easyJet a lot, then. Thet'd be right down you're alley it would seem.

Oh, and I think its quite rude to call most pax "braindead".

Nope, only Qantas in the last few years. Are the people that fly on those airlines not total morons incapable of handling their baggage efficiently or something?

Rude, or accurate?

As pointed out, check in is redundant seeing as it’s all automated now.

One of the most sensible things I’ve seen QF do on a couple of very rare occasions in the past 6-12 months is to post staff at the entrance to the security queues to turn people back who had too much carry on, including in the priority lane. This is the most logical place to enforce it because the staff can send those DYKWIA folks straight to the bag drop machines (WPs can be among the worst offenders!)

By the time they’re trying to board with the kitchen sink, staff just want to get 180 people on the plane and the door shut so will be more likely to be lenient or avoid conflict which ironically then causes delays.

My carry ons is always a small backpack that goes under the seat in front of me. If I want something during the flight it is in easy reach. Everything else is checkin. Overhead bins should be restricted to people who are seated underneath them. You should only get one piece of luggage in the overhead. It would be great if they called forward everyone with just under seat luggage so we weren’t held up by people clogging the aisles wrestling with putting their luggage in/taking out of the overhead. It might encourage more under seat luggage.
