Interesting. Doesn't seem that anyone other than $CJ has received a similar notification, although the sample size may be a bit small. I also don't see anything on the QF web site, but I haven't done a thorough search.

No, don't do that! I am not interested in the $5 saving on the airfare that would result. And in fact I am more sceptical that the airfare would remain the same and the $5 would end up in the airline's annual report on the black side of the ledger.
You are probably right. I was just thinking out loud and I hadn't thought that if QF took the muffin or the cookie away, on non breakfast, lunch, dinner flights, then QF would resemble JQ. To me the refreshment service would be OK if they only offered a soft drink or water. But since I have paid for the snack and they are offering it I feel obliged to take it.

This FAQ mentions something about it at the bottom. From this though it appears there is no change to meal times, just a change to special meals.

Answer

Now that I think about it, as a veg(lo) I've often received a unique meal even though the standard meal/refreshment being dished out was just fruit, ice cream or a muesli bar etc anyway..... possibly designed to appease people that whinged because they wanted a "special" meal in any case. I guess this email is effectively just ending that practice.......

When Qantas still had the meal boxes, a couple of times they handed me a common meal to which I politely mentioned there should be a special meal for me (before I had opened it to see inside) and each time they angrily snapped at me "there's no meat in it". Typical

Yep, that explains it pretty well. Funny thing, although I've visited the web site maybe thousands of times, I've never looked under the "help" tab before. I always considered that it just contained help on using the site, and not general help with rules etc.

The "help" facility is quite a treasure trove of information!

Forgot to report back.... It seems they're just phasing out special meals on flights where the standard meal is a snack. I never saw the point of that anyway. Anyway, on this 2 hour ~4:50pm flight my meal was a 50 gram bag of cashews and sultanas. Sheesh..
