Hi,

I need some advice, i have have booked a trip to USA (me and my wife) on Qantas frequent flyer points (ADL-SYD-LAX then JFK-LAX-MELB-ADL) for May/June this year. We are needing to book our 3 yrs old son (we are going to pay for his flights) and i just got a quote from Flight Centre for $1820.82 for the same flights as us (inc taxes, etc).

Flight Centre said that there are only 3 seat left of the fare price (but there are plenty of seat available on the flight). In anyones opinion do you think this is a pretty good deal, i know there are some cheap fares out their to USA on other airlines, just dont know whether to hold off and wait to see if Qantas release a new special to USA......

Also the guy at flight centre said that the transit time in Syd was a bit short (arrive in syd domestic at 11:50am and depart for LA at 13:20), this is what Qantas system gave me when i put in a search for award flights from Adelaide to LAX......

If you want to PM me specific dates, im happy to double check the fare to ensure theyre not inflating it.

1:30 should be enough time for transit in SYD if everything goes right. You may have problems if your plane is delayed leaving ADL as you'll need to get onto the transit bus in SYD, which only leaves every 20 minutes. This could be a problem, especially as you'll also need to go through outbound customs.

The mitigating factor is of course if you are taking an "international" flight from ADL - SYD (a flight with a number of QF399 or lower) as you'll arrive into T1, and you'll only need to go through transit security.

A couple of comments.

1) Syd-LAX is a popular flight for these guys although this seems quite exey. As you have FF points booked your call on risking it being booked out. My last 3 flights to USA have been booked out.

2) On your transit time query I flew into Sydney Domestic in November and had 1.5hrs before my international flight with checked bags and made it with ease as bags were checked through. I would give myself some more wriggle room if possible though as a 1/2 delay and being out of sync with the transit bus could cause you unecesary stress.

This sounds like a decent fare in non upgradeable economy class.

Once the cheap seats - I am guessing this is in "O" class - are gone it is very difficult to have more released as it means plane is filling up.

In my view you are unlikely to get cheaper bearing in mind that you have very specific flight requirements and cannot be flexible in any way - ie your son must be on that flight.

If it were me I would be booking (although not through flight centre) and ticketing ASAP.

Did you call Qantas and ask them to quote, or try quoting same flights as you online with 1 Adult + 1 Child to get a feel for the child price? I tried some on various dates and the child fare seemed to be around $1540-$1580. (adult fares around $2k)
