Qantas CL approached by VA

The majority of public servants I know are hard working fantastic people. And no, I am not a public servant!

I don't have a problem with public servants either as I have many friends and family who are public servants.

I believe there is some Public servants who think they are more important than the public they serve.

I think post 21 of this thread proves you are correct:!:

Well when your in my position and as valuable to QF as I am then I don't think the rules apply to you ;) I know that sounds horrible but most CL's say that for two reasons. One if someone asks them about it they can just parrot that line. Two it makes it much more exclusive for them. Funny note in the CL box it has a "Policy" list and the first rule is that its non transferable :D Also in the CL box you get a little map with the locations of all the Chairmans Lounges. I felt like a pirate looking for treasure :D

I would have thought that given VA now have JB on board that they would have tapped him (and other high level ex-QF employees) for as comprehensive a list that he (they) could recall of companies and people who are CL.

Some people here, IIRC, are presumptuously marking the OP as a DYKWIA (we have at least one in our midst :D ;)). If he has been kind enough to share the information don't strangle the golden goose giving us information that the vast majority of us will never have the opportunity to access.

Im little concerned that taxpayer money is getting spent on splurging...why does a DFAT representative need to travel to London that frequently? Have they not heard of telephones?

Am I the only one to believe that there may be a conflict of interests for QF to hand out CL status to politicians and public servants? I guess there will be a counter balance if and when VA/DJ offer the same.

Given that our delightful politicians have the ability to change laws relating to air travel it does seem a little odd that those same politicians are receiving unpaid benefits from our biggest airline. (.....and I am sure other companies.)

No you're not. In fact, politicians acknowledge that themselves. Every 6 months the various parliament's publish a Register of Member's Interests. All CL memberships will be listed in there.
On a side note, also provides evidence on how 'high up' you need to be for QF to give you CL.

Does the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport have CL membership?

Wow... so we've gone from questioning the editorial integrity of AustBT to sniffing the OP for potential whiffs of DYKWIA syndrome?

Hilarious.

I'm sure that when considering their first post, the OP has reminded themselves of the following (taken from the DFAT website page):
Conduct and ethics

Working for the Department both in Australia and overseas requires the highest standards of conduct. Exemplary ethical conduct on the part of the Department's employees contributes significantly to the standing of the Department in Australia and overseas and the overall effectiveness of its work.
In implementing the Collective Agreement and undertaking their duties, employees are required to uphold the Australian Public Service (APS) Values and comply with the APS Code of Conduct as enshrined in the Public Service Act 1999. Employees also need to comply with the Department's Code of Conduct for Overseas Service, which takes account of the particular significance of the Department's representational role outside Australia.

Yes indeed :).......but listing members' interests is exactly that, it provides a list of members' interests. It tells us what we all know...ie some (many?) politicians receive CL membership from QF. My question, and one that is going off topic, is how has it become acceptable for MP's, and to a lessor extent public servants, to receive this benefit from a large private business? (One that has restrictions placed on it by laws created by our MP's)

Hey everyone. As a CL most of my travel is Qantas and Oneworld centric. However, I have given VA a try. As some background, when the status match occured I had just become a CL. When I sent in the email they noticed on the card that I was a CL. At the time they had no CL program and matched me as a WP. Now I have just received a call from a leading PR woman at VA who has invited me to participate in a program that they are readying to launch (currently code named "Invite+"). I will keep you all posted.what are your opinions?

My opinion (and getting this back on topic), I would love to think that they have brought in an "invitation-only" membership level akin to CL. Makes sense, so long as it isn't modelled completely on QF's CL - an after all, JB knew all about that program when he left QF to head VA. Perhaps the intervening time has been spent developing their "offer".

Now if only I can get myself on that list :D (I'm not holding my breath :o let me tell you).

Have you considered that, given their seniority, it may be a responsibility of their job - considering we have just a few embassies to which a flight to LHR would be the obvious connection point, given they are flying (I would expect) QF most of the time.

Apologies if this is a little rude...but come on guys, I think this thread has been well and truly hijacked.
Whether DFAT should being flying staff to LHR, whether Members of parliament should be allowed CL and the integrity of AusBT are all great topics but I definitely think they are great topics all worthy of their own threads.

No, not the only one;)

I would strongly suggest to VA that they learn how to run a J class service on their aircraft before they worry about going into competition with QF on a CL type concept on the ground.

I don't have a problem with politicians having CL status at all. All it does is formalise the discretionary benefits they would most likely receive anyway. Kristina Keneally, and family, were upgraded to America while she was Premier. I believe as a head-of-government she would have received that upgrade anyway, CL or not. Do you honestly think that politicians aren't getting waivers and favour whether they have a VIP tier or not?

I've tried Virgin J class a few times now. They're doing pretty good in my opinion.
