Qantas Club "Additional checked baggage allowance"

I recently purchased my MIL a Qantas Club membership after dropping from Gold to Silver.
The information on Qantas’ website about the benefits of Qantas Club Membership, particularly regarding additional checked baggage allowance, seems unclear. At the airport this morning she was charged $130 for a second piece of checked luggage.

It appears that the additional benefit of extra baggage is only available to bronze members who purchase a Qantas Club Membership, as silver members do not receive this additional allowance.

Any thoughts on recourse available here? After being told by QF staff at checking on the "benefit" or lack there of, had this been made clear on the Qantas Club page, I would have made provisions for purchasing luggage ahead of time.

The benefits don’t stack, Qantas Club or Silver gives you the extra allowance, not both. For domestic, that lets you bring 1 piece with 32Kg, instead of the usual 23Kg.

For international with the piece system, you actually get 3 pieces instead of 1, or if the weight system, it’s 42Kg instead of 30Kg.

The explanation for the tilda (~) next to allowance on the qantas club page states a explanation/disclaimer and refers to the checked baggage page where the explanation is fairly clear.

If one doesn't follow the tilda, I can see where some ambiguity appears. LIke many things its allin the fine print.

Additional just means above the baseline inclusion of the fare (ie the bronze allowance).

Since you don't seem to have taken a look at the baggage page to actually check the allowance, how did you come up with what you thought should have been included?

I'm usually pretty diligent with terms and conditions and did check the ~

I don't believe I should have to dig through additional pages for "further information" if plain English states "additional allowance" applies to me or not.

"~ Extra checked baggage allowance is only available on Qantas-operated flights with a QF flight number on your ticket and allowance varies by route and travel class. Piece, size and weight restrictions apply. Benefit entitlements are subject to memberships at the time of flying. For further information, refer to checked baggage allowances."

Under what assumption should someone make its above baseline? (ie the bronze allowance).

Because that assumption works both ways in my assumption is wasn't.

The allowance between Qantas Lifetime Bronze members and Qantas Club, Qantas Silver members is as follows:
  • 32 kg per bag (from the original 23 kg limit per bag) on Australia domestic Qantas operated flights
  • 12 kg more luggage on Qantas operated international flights to all regions except the Americas
  • 3 bags total at 32 kg on Qantas operated international flights to the Americas (from 1 bag in economy, 2 bags in Premium Economy/Business and 3 pieces in First class)

Why make an assumption when they point you to the page that clearly spells out all the different allowances?

You still haven't answered how you came up with your expected allowance.

That table is clearly a very high level summary and doesn't stipulate how the extra allowance is broken down (i.e. is it by piece, by weight, etc). Sounds like you've assumed it's an extra piece on top of any tier status allocation for the traveller, and you know what they say about assumptions. IMO they have all the required T&C's.

So let's say you're not Silver, only Qantas Club. You bring two pieces because it says you get an increased allowance with Qantas Club.

On domestic, you can still only bring one piece. The extra allowance is weight, 32Kg instead of 23Kg, so you still would get charged for excess baggage if you bring two.

At some point you have to look beyond the promo page!
