Morning all, not always sure where to post things a sI tend to read more than I post so if this is in the wrong place please feel free to move it.

Just found on ebay a seller selling 4 year Qantas Club memberships for about $750 Aussie if you buy it now. Now this looks like a great price but do you think it is legal? How can the seller be making any money if it was. The link is
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Qantas-Club-...QptZLHQ5fDefaultDomainQ5f15QQsalenotsupported

Search Qantas Club on ebay for more info, link does not seem to work

I would be interested of all those in the know as if this allowed by Qantas?

thanks

Not allowed.

Would be in someone else's name - are you willing to change your name to use the membership?

The link is not working but if you search Qantas Club on ebay 4 of them come up for sale.

I've fixed the OP's link.

The following is incorrect:
A Qantas Club membership gets you and one other person access to the Qantas Club lounges or the lounges of any other OneWorld airline on your day of travel, regardless of class of travel, regardless of whether you are travelling domestically or internationally. OneWorld airlines include Qantas, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, Lan Chile, and JAL. No lounge is the same but you can as a rule, expect free alcohol, snacks, showers, and a refuge from the depressing effects of the public departure lounges. For long haul international flights with lengthy transit periods, the showers and lounges are a godsend.
AFAIK, it's QF, BA and AA lounges before flying QF, BA or AA!

The words "These cards are good. They are not illegal or otherwise dodgy" kinda spook me a little. Why would a person selling something which is legal and legit feel the need to advertise the fact?

Furthermore check out Fly - The Qantas Club - Terms & Conditions
, 6.3 highlights it nicely

"6.3 The Card and membership number are valid for use only by the Member and are not transferable in any circumstances. The Card is valid for use only during the period indicated on it."

They will allow name changes, but you need to provide evidence (such as court documents \ marrage certificates etc...) which prove your name has changed, and it's still the same person.

Reading the ad, it is possible that the seller has access to some corporate scheme that is allowing them to source and sell mutliple Qantas Club memberships at some discount rate.

True, but then again things which are completely legit don't usually need to remind people of it's legitimacy or it's legality, and it certainly doesn't usually need to remind people it's not dodgy.

I personally think this is a case of caveat emptor or "buyer beware". (Sorry I couldn't resist the oppurtunity of using a little Latin in my post, don't oftan get the chance :) )

It may be very well legit, just the ad itself has quite a few of the trademarks of a scam, such as bad spelling and the ability to get your money back all in the one sentance - "This will safeguards you and if there's a drama, you can get your money back" in addition to the reminder that it's legit and legal.

I wouldn't go so far as saying it was legit - if it were a corprate type deal, I would have thought that there would have been some sort of eligibilty criteria (that may or may not be enforced). Just saying that it is not necessarily a existing membership that someone is trying to unload.

Definte no no! Could also be someone who has just claimed it on their end of year tax expenses and then are offloading it! A bit of double dipping perhaps? Sounds dodgy to me!

Definitely sounds dodgy! It never ceases to amaze me what some people will try to sell. I wonder how much longer the auction will last on eBay before being taken down.

I thought that initially. Most corporate schemes only offer a maximum of 2 years though, not 4. It looks like a great deal, but I'm not willing to risk it.

Yes there must be eligibility criteria but this is set by the "corporation" and I'm not sure that qantas really doesn't anything to enforce a companies criteria, provided that the scheme organiser is happy or the person has the proper scheme number. The AFF corporate scheme highlights that the criteria can be pretty loose. Plus memberships are tansferable for a centrally organised scheme.

Maybe someone set up a scheme and is selling of the extra memberships required to make up the minimum of 10 members??

Hasn't anybody simply asked the vendor ??

He / she may have a very good explanation.

How many QFF would you need to cover a 4 year QC Membership? Would it be possible, that this person is ' burning off ' their QFF points, by offering to arrange for a 4 year Membership, using his / her QFF points..... and give the buyer's details as a ' relative ', in order to strike up the new Membership card??

Though, surely you would get a better return by buying ' gift cards ' with the excess QFF points....

regards,
GORDO

You mean like this bozo who appears to have stolen a Qantas Club towel (still in it's wrapper) and now thinks he can sell it on Ebay?

QANTAS CLUB TOWEL HIGH QUALITY COLLECTOR'S PIECE RARE - eBay Airlines, Aviation, Transportation, Collectables. (end time 09-Jul-09 22:00:00 AEST)

Regarding the original auction mentioned - it does sound suss, but could be a legitimate deal. I wouldn't trust it though. Also, assuming they have used their own card for the photo, they have likely provided enough details for Qantas to work out who they are...

Still makes it dodgy (unless a relative buys it) which could see you land in trouble...

Rare? It is a Qantas Club towel.

I am not sure how it could be legitimate unless it was a corporate type of membership but then Qantas would not be too impressed someone selling this on eBay.

The problem is that QF has the right to cancel your membership at anytime. Even if the seller is legit, if QF finds out that you purchased a QP membership on e-bay (which I'm sure is against their rules) you may find QF cancels the membership. Furthermore they may even have legal grounds to cancel your membership without refund (or a very reduced refund, as no doubt the seller is skimming something off the top) as technically you never paid them - the seller did...

I sent the seller a question on eBay asking about how he got such a good rate, was it corporate and if I could use it to renew my existing membership.

The response was:

Dear samh004,

No, it's only for new individual memberships.

My mate processes memberships for Qantas and they are the staff rate

Dodgyness to the MAX...

QF would not be happy if they found out an employee was selling QP memberships at a heavily discounted rate to a mate to flog off on ebay (especially at a profit, because no doubt someone who is not QF is making a $ or two).

It would effectively be considered stealing, and I'd almost guarentee that QF would track down the buyers and cancel their membership.
