Flew QF9 back on January 9th to Perth with one bag checked in. When I arrived at Perth I was greeted with this:

Immediately went to the baggage desk to file a claim and was given a piece of paper I then had to use to claim damaged baggage from the Qantas website. I've since lodged the claim online and aside from asking for additional pictures Qantas has not gotten back to me. Interestingly enough, on the paper customers are told to wait to hear back from Qantas on what to do next. Well, my flight back to Sydney was departing soon and so I decided to just buy an inexpensive new bag as I needed a bag with handles that work.

I contacted Qantas by phone today to see what is going on and was told it could take 4-6 weeks to receive a response and they may reimburse me for the luggage. Is this a normal wait time for damaged bags with Qantas? In the future, what should I do when I encounter damaged bags (aside from buying a Rimowa bag which carries a lifetime no questions asked warranty)

Mine took a few days when I put my claim for damaged baggage.

The last time my checked bag was damaged was 6 years ago. Came off a QF flight in SIN and noticed a corner had been smashed in. Went to the baggage counter, a report was written up, luggage was collected from the hotel that night, and a brand new one delivered 1 or 2 days later.

Was quite impressed, but may well have been due to the efficiency of service in Singapore (and SATS) rather then Qantas.

Off topic, but wasn't the consensus that QF First baggage tags are only provided on flights with an F cabin, which QF9 does not have? Seems inconsistent.

OP checked in at MEL F. I suspect they just did this on autopilot.

That was not my experience at all. Maybe it is because I landed at a small regional airport like PER with limited international service (i.e. there's just one baggage carousel at PER INTL).

I am inclined to think so given how efficient and effective things are at Changi.

No rhyme or reason here so far as I can tell. For instance, I used the F check-in at LAX but my bag was only tagged as business (possibly because on J service was offered on my flight). Meanwhile here I check-in at MEL F and it gets a first tag slapped on. Like everything with Qantas it is consistently inconsistent. Heck, even if F check in at MEL is different from SYD international, in the sense that it is a separate check-in area whereas in SYD it's just a separate desk.
In the past I just put in a claim and they give me a bit of paper and refer me to a nearby luggage shop and repaired.
Which would have been great either. Frankly, I would not have minded to have it repaired at Perth either, but they never got back to me on what to do and on my last day in PER decided to just buy a new bag and claim it against Qantas when they do decide to get back. Why they are dragging their heels is beyond me, perhaps I need to follow up with higher ups at QF.

LOL. You landed at T3 - this is NOT the main international terminal.

Also tell Perth people they have a "small regional airport" and good luck leaving the state intact :p

It's the main international terminal for Qantas.

It's no Sydney is all I'm going to say. Don't get me wrong. Perth is a great place. Restaurants way better than you'll find in Sydney. But the main terminal of Perth leaves much to be desired. For instance, you need to take a bus to get to the nearest train station (very Melbourne-esque).

Now some will point out that T3 is not the main terminal of Perth, and they may be correct here. But if you fly Qantas (anywhere) or JetStar (domestic) this will be the impression you get. It was only on my return flight back to Sydney on Virgin where I got to go through T1 and notice the difference.

Your comment was generalised to the entire PER airport. You need to be careful with generalisations like this.
It's a fair generalization if you only fly out of T3 (i.e. just Qantas/JetStar). Let us hope that Qantas has some humility in the coming years and moves over to the main terminal like everyone else.

QF is out of T4 in the main, but anyway.

yes, that is the general idea in the longer term. Joyce's ongoing fight with PER hasn't helped anything, but yes there should be proper consolidation going forward. Hence the rather excellent Airport Central railway station setup at T1/T2 which makes it very easy to get from the CBD out to PER (yes, I know there is a bus to T3/T4 from Refcliffe station I think it is too).

anyway, good luck with your bag.

Not just consolidation but there needs to be respect from Qantas. Regardless of how much Qantas pounds their chest saying the East Coast is where all their international service is at, the fact of the matter is much of the European service of Qantas goes through Perth and not Sydney or Melbourne. Maybe that will change with Project Sunrise, we will see. But it is high time for Qantas to start putting in things like a First class lounge like you find at Melbourne and Sydney. And I would maintain that Australians would rather connect in Perth than have to slough it through S'pore or Abu Dhabi.

Why would you put in a first class lounge at an airport you don't operate first class from?

Getting OT, but with the move to PER main Int'l terminal coming up, plans to use the sunrise planes to replace 787 on LHR -PER , QF may consider a small F section at a new QF lounge.

Not until they finally build the second main runway along with the upgraded international terminal….
