Qantas Delays/Cancellations

On 21 November, a Monday, QF797, the 1130 hours ASP - MEL that was airborne at 1255 should arrive at about 1652, 77 minutes behind schedule. VH-VYC is the B738.

QF154 (B738 ZK-ZKE) is the 1505 hours mid afternoon that took off at 1629; arrival at 1803 hours, 48 minutes tardy, is likely.

The 1115 hours SYD - SIN, QF81, departed at 1544. VH-QPA (A333) should arrive at 2055 hours this evening instead of 1630.

I suspect its the similar for tech crew - or when they turn the ignition off?

Sign on is one hour prior to planned departure. Stand-down is 15 minutes after the first door is opened, which allows time for shutting down, paperwork, etc.

The ignition is almost always off. Jet engines don't normally need it.

Continuing on Monday 21 November, QF93 (the 1115 hours MEL - LAX) still had not departed by 1502 hours. This must be getting close to when the flight crew is unable to fly due to exceeding the maximum hours of duty, which if I recall one of our esteemed contributors said was 18 hours but could be extended by agreement to 20. Happy to be corrected, but scheduled flight time is 14 hours 20 minutes plus the minimum three and a half hours late the flight is, and on top of that there's the sign on time (an hour before?) and sign off (half an hour after pulling up at the gate?) so that adds up to 19 hours and 20 minutes if the sign on time had not been altered to be later due to a 'known' as opposed to a 'sudden' delay in MEL.

In a long delay, when you have a chance to reorder the fuel, you can plan on flying faster, so that 14:20 should look more like 13:40. Be a bit of an issue if there's medical problem today though.

For pilots, did one of our esteemed contributors previously suggest that signing on for an international flight was typically an hour before scheduled departure to similarly allow time for the iPad/ 'paperwork' and checks?

To presumably avoid the storm hitting MEL on Monday 21 November at around 1800 hours, QF625 from BNE to MEL has flown a most unusual route - over Mathoura NSW then via Echuca, Kyabram, Shepparton, Nagambie, Avenel, Mansfield and then doing a circuit around the Mt Buller (Vic) area prior to flying over Jamieson. This is the 1455 hours BNE - MEL that took off very punctually at 1503 but is expected to arrive in MEL at 1847, 32 minutes late. VH-XZP is the B738.

QF449 (1630 hours ex SYD, B738 VH-VZX) should arrive MEL at 1837, 32 late after being airborne at 1647, but delayed en route in the Yarra Glen area due to the common racetrack-looking like 'hold.'

The 1715 hours ex SYD (QF451, A332 VH-EBO) was in the sky at 1814 and should arrive 59 minutes behind at 1949. QF455, the following 1730 hours departure on the same route took off at 1840; with B738 VH-VZU, arrival is predicted as 2002, 57 minutes late.

Which lead to the SIN-BNE flight last night getting retimed.

MEL was a mess this morning. Weather delays with the airport down to 1 runway. 814 pushed back slightly late, was 4th in line for departure when the rain got worse and spacing increased. Then was lined up and about to go when an ATC conflict with an aircraft at Essendon had ATC cancel take off clearance for 814 and moved off the runway.
Finally left the ground an hour late.

Finally left the ground an hour late.

In the very early evening of Tuesday 22 November, the delays are continuing ex MEL. QF452, the 1700 northwards to SYD took off at 1810 hours. B738 VH-VZC is expected to arrive at around 1935, 70 minutes behind schedule.

On a different route, QF1584 (B717 VH-YQV, the 1555 HBA up to SYD) took off at 1646. It should be at its destination at 1830 tonight, 45 minutes tardy.

QF155 MEL to AKL delayed till 1840 but given we haven't started boarding yet I don't think we'll be making that time either. Just enough time for more squid :)

bosox76, enjoy the squid or as a market fishmonger haughtily said to me one day 'Sir, we don't sell 'squid': only 'calamari.''

For clarity if anyone reads this six months hence and the times have changed, QF155 is the scheduled 1815 hours departure.

QF452 (1700 hours MEL - SYD, B738 VH-VZC) was airborne at 1810; arrival should be at approximately 1915 hours, 50 minutes behind the eight ball.

Thanks Melburnian1. I certainly did. Sorry should have added the scheduled departure time. Hopefully boarding soon. I'm now fed and not so keen on the after midnight arrival :0

QF155 ended up on Tuesday 22 November departing MEL 59 minutes late at 1914 hours for a forecast 0020 Wednesday 23 arrival, 25 minutes late.

The early afternoon 1300 hours PER - MEL took off at 1317. QF476 (A332 VH-EBQ) was however held above Bendigo, Victoria and hence should arrive at about 2009, 34 minutes late.

Probably as a result of the hours late QF93 from MEL and QF11 from SYD, the B744-operated QF11 LAX - JFK extension of QF16 from BNE to LAX did not operate, it appears, on Monday 21 November while QF12 back to JFK to LAX was also cancelled. QF16 departed LAX 10 minutes late at 2330 hours but its arrival on Wednesday 23 November will be delayed by 35 minutes to a predicted 0740.

On Tuesday 22 November, QF467 (the SYD - MEL 1930 hours flight) was airborne only about 10 minutes late at 2000 hours but due to being 'held' above Mt Buller (Vic), it should arrive at around 2155, 50 minutes late. Aircraft is A332 VH-EBD. This is the sort of productivity-destroying delay that a properly built and well operated high speed train would eliminate if the experience in numerous other nations is any guide.

QF465, the 1900 hours southbound is behind QF467 with the former (B738 VH-VZC) having been in the sky at 2011 for an estimated arrival at 2202 hours, 87 minutes behind schedule.

The 2010 hours from CBR to MEL took off at 2046 with B738 VH-VYE. It should pull in to its nominated MEL gate at around the 2223 hours mark, 63 minutes delayed.

Completing a threesome of SYD - MEL delays in the mid evening, QF489 (2015 hours that took off at 2042) is as at 2144 in the standard 'hold' as noted above: its arrival is predicted for 2214, 24 minutes late but this could be a little underestimated by FR24 as it appears to be still in a racecourse-like flying pattern.

QF768 (1500 hours PER - MEL that was airborne very promptly at 1512 with A332 VH-EBF) should arrive about half an hour late at 2205.

Wednesday 23 November 2016 sees QF449 (B738 VH-VXU, the 1630 hours southbound SYD - MEL) not having become airborne until 1744. Arrival is suggested as 53 minutes behind at 1858.

Northbound, QF448 (1645 hours from MEL) took off at 1753. Arrival of B738 VH-VZE should be at 1911, 51 minutes late.

Flagship QF1 at this time of year is the 1650 hours SYD - DXB - LHR that is usually good in its timekeeping departing from Australia's most populous city. However today it did not take off until 1811, so DXB arrival should be about 55 minutes late at 0135 on Thursday 24 November.

QF2175 (1715 hours from coastal PQQ to SYD) took off at 1805 for a forecast arrival of 1917, 42 minutes tardy with Q300 VH-SBT undertaking the duty. Just ahead of it is QF2031 (ARM - SYD) that with VH-TQH should arrive at 1911, 41 minutes behind the timetable.

The 1820 hours from SYD north to an airport up for sale, MCY, was airborne at 1922 with B717 VH-NXJ likely to pull in at 1945, 50 minutes behind schedule.

The 1825 hours QF1520 (CBR - SYD) took off at 1930. B717 VH-YQX should arrive at 2019, 59 minutes late. B738 VH-VYK on the closely timetabled 1830 hours CBR - SYD was airborne at 1949 hours, and then in a holding pattern south of Crookwell at 2000 hours, for a suggested arrival at 2032, 67 minutes late.

The earlier 23 November storm in SYD continues to cause mid evening delays. QF2043 (1855 hours DBO to SYD, Q200 VH-TQG) took off at 1951 for a suggested 2102 hours, 57 minutes tardy arrival.

QF583 (1955 hours SYD across to PER, A332 VH-EBS) was in the sky at 2134. It should arrive at approximately 2305 hours, 75 minutes late.

The 1930 hours CBR - BNE, QF1554 (VH-YQY, a B717) was airborne at 2139, so it is forecast to arrive at around 2201 instead of 2015, 106 minute late.

Wednesday 23 November's QF6 from SIN to SYD (A332 VH-EBL) was the scheduled 2350 hours that was airborne on Thursday 24 at 0051. It should arrive at around 1128, 38 minutes late.

Tuesday 22 November's longhaul QF12 (B744 VH-OEI) was the 2230 hours departure from LAX. It was in the sky at 0039 on Wednesday 23 for a projected Thursday 24 November morning arrival of 0950, 80 minutes behind schedule.

B744 VH-OEJ on QF16, the Tuesday 22 2320 hours LAX - BNE that took off at 0029 on Wednesday 23 November should arrive on Thursday 24 at approximately 0824, 79 minutes late. As QF15 is not scheduled to depart BNE until 1115 hours, it should - touch wood - be easily able to depart on time.

The early morning 0635 hours from MCY down to SYD, QF1579 (B717 VH-NXJ) took off at 0736. Arrival is predicted for 1001, 46 minutes tardy.

QF2020, the 0820 hours SYD - ARM appears to be only moving off at around 0902 so Q300 VH-SBG will be at least 40 minutes late arriving in the university town.
