Qantas Delays/Cancellations

On Monday 17 April 2017, the delayed QF11 (B744 VH-OJT) arrived at JFK at 1921 hours, 161 minutes late. It did not then depart as QF12 until 2124 hours, 194 minutes behind schedule and therefore touched down at LAX at about 0023 hours today (Tuesday 18) instead of 2055 hours on Monday, so it is now 208 minutes tardy.

Although QF's website suggests that A388 VH-OQA on the continuation of QF12 from LAX to SYD will depart at 0100, with a gate arrival time of the transcontinental precursor of about 0030 hours this would be impossible as passengers have to alight from one and board the second leg, and baggage has to be presumably also be transferred for the SYD-bound passengers. AN 0130 hours QF12 pushback (three hours late) is possible.

QF16 is estimated to depart LAX at 0230 hours on Tuesday 18 for BNE, 190 minutes late with arrival suggested as 0910 hours, also three hours late.

In turn, QF15 on Wednesday 19 April from BNE to LAX, the 1020 hours, will be delayed by at least an hour, and perhaps more the way things are(n't) going.

Everything that AFF member Flyerqf opined would occur is. Hats off!

Also on Monday 17 April, QF74 (2325 hours SFO - SYD B744) departed 24 minutes late; Wednesday 19 arrival is expected at 0747, 47 minute slate (albeit an appropriate time to arrive.)

Unusually, 'the 8' is also late, with Monday 17 pushback commencing at 2242, 42 late, so Wednesday 19 arrival is predicted to be 0650 hours, a similar 45 minutes late. FR24 had reported storms in Dallas on Monday afternoon so that may have had something to do with the delay.

Earlier on Tuesday 18 April, QF27 departed from SYD at 1225, 50 minutes late with same day SCL arrival forecast as 45 minutes late at 1200 hours 'high noon.'

Also on Tuesday 18 April, QF1584 (1550 hours from HBA up to SYD that was airborne at 1643, B717 VH-NXR) should arrive at 1824, 44 minutes late.

The delayed QF12 departed LAX at 0114 on Tuesday 18; SYD arrival of VH-OQA should be at 0854 hours, 154 minutes late on Wednesday 19 April.

QF16, the 2320 hours Monday 17 LAX - BNE departed at 0226 hours on Tuesday 18 April. Wednesday 19 Sunshine State arrival should be at 0910 hours, 180 minutes tardy.

The delay to QF15 tomorrow morning has yet to publicly appear on the QF website.

UPDATE: QF16 is even later, with arrival in BNE on Wednesday 19 further amended to a projected 0925 hours, 195 minutes late. If true, QF15 will be lucky to get away by 1110 hours.

In further on Tuesday 18 April, QF697, the 1855 hours early evening from MEL across to ADL is instead expected to depart at 2125. It looks like it is being formed by QF465 that came in from SYD at about 2045, so presumably some time earlier, another aircraft became defective. The delay would not want to be much more to threaten missing the ADL curfew.

Steady, many thanks. So far apart from yours, TT426 appears to have had a missed MEL approach and has diverted to ADL (this was a PER - MEL flight) while VA1313 from HBA to MEL also had a missed approach in MEL but looks to be again trying to land.

QF1500, the 0730 arrival into MEL ex HBA is estimated to arrive at 0920 hours while QF2077 from MQL to MEL should arrive about an hour late, roughly around 0845 but these times are subject to change as neither has yet departed. QF2280 from LST is estimated to arrive MEL at least 40 minutes late at 0830 hours.

At this stage MEL departures appear to be operated punctually, although they are to the west.

QF1529, the 0955 hours arrival in MEL ex CBR has been cancelled.

Also on Wednesday 19 April, QF407, the 0715 hours SYD - MEL that was airborne at 0802 hours (B738 VH-VYC) should arrive at 0924, 34 late.

QF411 (A332 VH-EBO, the 0730 hours departure on the same route took off at 0810; arrival is predicted for 0935, half an hour late.

Following the late arrival of QF16 in BNE on Wednesday 19 April, as discussed in previous posts above, the 19 April QF15 has been delayed from 1020 hours to an expected 1530 in its departure, meaning more time in the QF lounge for those who qualify but also a predicted same day LAX arrival at 1035.

My Internet is playing up so I would appreciate advice from others: I will stick my head out and assume that a delay of this magnitude will see QF11/QF12 LAX - JFK - LAX (due to depart LAX at 0820 hours) cancelled with passengers transferred to AA flights.

While there is currently a QF747 in LAX about to operate 18/April QF12, it would not make sense to hold this over to operate 19April transcontinental QF11/12.

The other possibility would have been to hold over tonight's QF16 or QF12 transpacific and put passengers on the other QF flights and/or AA73 except that AA73 does not operate on 18/4.

Easier to shuffle QF12 transcontinental to AA
With enough warning some passengers may be able to negotiate a seat on QF8 but this requires a earlier departure from NYC than would be required for QF12 ex JFK.

Looks like QF95 due into LAX at 0830 is taking over the QF11/12 leaving LAX at 1100.

19/04 QF974 BNE - TSV scheduled 14.10 departed late due to late arrival of incoming aircraft. Wheels up at 14.42

On Wednesday 19 April, the delayed QF15 did end up departing from BNE bang on 1530 hours with LAX arrival forecast as 1045, 285 minutes tardy.

Due to QF94's diversion into SYD as noted above, QF93, the 0915 hours MEL - LAX departed at 1453 this afternoon, 338 minutes tardy with LAX arrival predicted same day as 1205, 330 minutes behind schedule.

Amazingly given how late it will be, the transcontinental USA QF11 is showing as operating - so my prediction above was dead wrong - with predicted departure at 1345, 325 minutes late for a JFK arrival time of 2200 hours, 320 minutes past the allotted. I am unsure whether the QF95 or QF15 arrival in LAX is forming this Wednesday 19 QF11.

Strangely QF12, the 1800 hours JFK - LAX on Wednesday 19 is appearing on the QF website as 'cancelled' so perhaps QF11 is also, but QF has neglected to update its website for this eastbound leg (and I am correct after all.) Time will reveal.

Thousands of kilometres away, the Tuesday 18 April QF10 (A388 VH-OQC on the 1330 hours schedule ex LHR) departed at 1534, 124 minutes late with the DXB stop from 0118 to 0255 on Wednesday 19 (respectively 103 and 80 minutes tardy) with tonight's MEL arrival suggested as 2255, 120 minutes late.

This is expected to delay 'the 9' (to again use the delightful descriptor) from a normal 2255 hours departure on 19 April to a predicted 0040 hours on Thursday 20 April for a DXB arrival at 0845, 100 minutes delayed.

Also on 19 April, QF7 (1230 longhaul SYD - DFW) departed 50 late at 1320; arrival should be 35 minutes tardy at 1335 hours.

Earlier, while QF29 (B744 MEL - HKG) commenced pushback on time at 1020 hours, it is predicted to arrive half an hour late at 1830 this evening.

QF108 arrived in SYD from PEK at about 1411, 51 minutes late this afternoon.

QF443 (1500 hours bang on mid afternoon SYD down to MEL, A333 of QFi VH-QPF) did not take off until 1742 hours so arrival of this fairly rare use of a QFi A333 should be at 1854, 139 minutes late. It was also on QF420 and before that QF409 so it has been shuttling up and down on Australia's by far busiest air route.

Busy day, Melburnian1

Some strange operational changes today by QF.

It does looks like QF11 will operate LAX to JFK but terminate there, with the return sector to LAX as QF12 cancelled.

The inbound QF95 is not scheduled to operate a return flight as QF96, its stored at LAX until next Monday. It's highly possible that this aircraft will overnight at JFK then position to LAX tomorrow.

By cancelling the late QF12 JFK to LAX, this means that the LAX to Australia flights can all leave on schedule this evening. Presumably with enough notice the JFK passengers will have been placed on other flights to LAX.

There's a first for everything. While memory is fickle and we can all miss occurrences, It's the first time I recall seeing this. Most unusual but presumably there's 'method in their madness' to quote the old saying.

In theory, very poor use of the B744 in stabling it in LAX for a few days. Might it undergo some required maintenance there at the new QF facility, or is that only for A388s?

The QF95/96 route has been operating sporadically and the 744 has been spending time at MEL and LAX in between flights. The hangar at LAX is for 744 and 388 aircraft.

The method in the madness is that it gets all Australia bound flights back on schedule and doesn't disrupt the JFK bound passengers (well, they are delayed but not stranded).

Cancelling only one sector of LAX-JFK-LAX rotation is not usually an option but is today because of the spare aircraft.
