Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Add 1210 CBR to BNE flight cancelled and it was a debacle. Text messages at 3am saying to see your booking, went to booking no changes made, rang and they made the flight change. Arrived at airport to find we had all been put on flight that had departed so we have "missed" the flight. Absolutely awful treatment had to fight to not pay for another flight

Still on Saturday 7 October, QF4 (HNl - SYD, A333 VH-QPB) is arriving at about 2104 hours, 69 minutes late tonight.

QF35 (A332 VH-EBR), the first of today's two flights from MEL up to SIN departed 24 late at 1309 but did not arrive until 1856 hours, 61 late.

QF423 SYD to MEL (scheduled to depart 10am) is delayed. Apparently the 'cabin is too hot and the captain is waiting for it to cool down before boarding passengers'.
Next update: engineers are working on air conditioning, expecting to start boarding by 10.05am

QF415 SYD to MEL (scheduled to depart at 8am) was cancelled. I was notified (sms, and via Qantas app) about 16 hours prior before boarding my DFW-SYD flight. Qantas staff said their systems did not disclose a reason for this cancellation.

ben4444, it is possible 'low bookings' may be the cause of your Sunday 7 October QF415 cancellation.

Further to ben4444's updates above, QF423 was indeed delayed and is following QF425 down from SYD to MEL. QF423 is the 1000 departure that was airborne at 1051 with A332 VH-EBP. Arrival should be at about 1206 hours, 31 minutes late.

QF771 (B738 VH-VYG, the 1000 hours from MEL across to PER) was airborne at 1041; arrival should be at 1136 hours, 31 minutes late.

The 1150 hours SYD long haul to JNB, the B744-operated QF63 is expected to depart two hours late.

There is also an expected two hour delay to another B744 flight, QF73 from SYD to SFO, which is normally timetabled at this time of year to depart at 1400 hours.

Saturday 7 October sees QF23 (1050 hours SYD - BKK) estimated to depart 40 minutes late.

UPDATE: By 1105, the delay had increased to a suggested departure at 1130. This flight has become one that is often delayed departing, and also frequently more than half an hour late arriving in Bangkok. The reasons are probably many and various, but some other morning departures such as QF129 to PVG (also an A333) do not seem as adversely affected.

Is the BKK route largely a leisure one (in comparison to say the PVG and HKG routes) and hence QF sometimes (where there are feasible choices) quietly puts it at the bottom of the pecking order if one A333 flight ex Sydney has to suffer a delay due to, say, a late inbound?

QF23 ended up departing at 1142. BKK arrival is suggested as 1720 hours, 40 minutes tardy.

QF23 is my usual flight into BKK and the the times I have been onboard and delayed it has been put down to late in bound flight and on one occasion a failed to board passenger.
Though since approx. March it just seems to be delayed for no reason though the Thai Airways flight that departs around the same time seems to always be on time.

There was repair work underway to one of the runways in Bangkok which reduced slots from memory and I don't recall how long it was to last, maybe this is the cause for the delays but then why not reschedule the flights to suit.

Later on Sunday 8 October, QF441 (1430 hours from SYD down to MEL, B738 VH-VXR that was in the sky at 1521) looks to be arriving at around the 1648 hours mark, 43 late.

The delay to B744-operated QF73 from SYD to SFO has extended to a suggested three hours, meaning departure at 1700 this afternoon. In the last couple of days there have been a few delays for the QF B744s, but there does not appear to be a common cause.

QF41, the 1450 hours mid afternoon SYD - CGK is showing as delayed until 1630 but that time has passed. This flight is usually punctual (or early) into CGK, so today is quite unusual.

The 1200 'high noon' CNS down to MEL, QF703 (B738 VH-VXL) that took off at 1240 hours is arriving at 1654 hours, 34 late.

QF443 (A332 VH-EBR, the 1500 hours SYD - MEL that was in teh sky about 20 late at 1537) looks to be arriving at approximately 1709 hours, 34 minutes late as there is a fair bit of 'traffic' into MEL, as is usual mid afternoon to mid evening on Sundays.

The 1545 hours MEL - ADL, QF691, took off at 1631, so arrival is delayed until a predicted 1713 hours, 38 late for B738 VH-VXN.

The delay to Sunday 8 October's QF73 is now a predicted 225 minutes with 1745 the (second) revised departure from SYD, and expecetd arrival in SFO becoming 1225 hours, 175 late.

Depending on what time the flight (and cabin) crews signed on, the available hours for staff are diminishing.

A 'live update' from any AFFers booked on today's QF73, or able to 'listen in' at the SYD international departures wing would be great.

A332 VH-EBA on QF37, the second of the day's MEL to SIN flights (the 1640 hours) took off at 1751. A 2230 hours arrival is expected, which would be 40 late.

QF693 (1645 hours MEL across to ADL that was pointing skywards at 1743, B738 VH-VXA) is on track to arrive at 1813, 38 minutes tardy.

B738 VH-VXN on QF688, 1710 hours ADL - MEL that was in the sky at 1756 is arriving at about 1934, 34 minutes behind time.

A heavy storm looks to be about to hit MEL at about 1940 local time: ATC is advising 20 minute delays inbound.

QF459 (1800 hours SYD - MEL that took off at 1841, B738 VH-XZC) should arrive at approximately 2005 hours, half an hour late but as at 1940 it was holding above Mt Buller, Vic.

UPDATE: The arrival time for QF459 has blown out to 2021 hours.

QF73 departed bang on 1800 hours from SYD, four hours late. Same day arrival has become 1225, 175 minutes behind schedule.

The 1810 hours from ADL across to MEL, QF694 took off at 1902, so arrival is expected at 2100, also an hour late with B738 VH-VXA that was in a hold above Rokewood, Vic for some time.

On Monday 9 October, QF8 from DFW is expected to arrive in SYD 41 minutes late at 0646 hours. This flight is often on time or less than a quarter of an hour late.

Although the Saturday 7 QF12 from JFK to LAX arrived a healthy 19 minutes early at 2041 - not unprecedented, but also not an everyday occurrence - the connecting A388-operated QF12 to SYD did not depart until 96 late at 0006 hours on Sunday 8, so Monday 9 October anticipated arrival has become 0856, also as luck would have it 96 minutes tardy.

Given the thunderstorm earlier in MEL on Sunday 8 October early evening, QF10 - which departed DXB only 15 minutes behind at 0150 hours - is not arriving until a predicted 2245 hours tonight, 50 minutes late and hence meaning a delay to the returning DXB and LHR-bound QF9. In recent weeks the latter has tended to pick up time on a gate-to-gate basis from MEL to DXB so even with departure 50 minutes late there is a chance of arriving LHR on time. As an example (noting that no two days are identical) the QF9 on Thursday evening 5 October 2017 ex MEL pushed back right on the dot at 2355 hours, arrived DXB about nine minutes early, departed seven minutes early at 0858 and arrived London at about 1343, 27 minutes early.

Due to QF41's late departure yesterday, the redeye QF42 from CGK down to SYD (A333 VH-QPB) is arriving on Monday 9 October at 0831 hours, 31 minutes behind the eight ball.

The HKG - BNE QF98 is mostly punctual but on 9 October, arrival of A333 VH-QPG should be at 0731, 46 minutes late.

QF128 from HKG to SYD (B744 VH-OJT) is arriving at about 0850, 40 minutes late.

One again, QF23 is delayed with SYD departure suggested as half an hour late at 1120 hours for BKK. As regular traveller and AFF member mrfreeze commented above, sometimes the delays seem to be for no apparent reason. This flight has become one of QFi's least punctual and is a stark contrast to the TG flight that departs at a similar time, which is almost always on time.

The 1125 hours SYD - SIN, QF81, is expected to depart at 1200 'high noon.'

Due to Sunday 7's two hour late departing QF63, the JNB - SYD overnight QF64 should arrive on Monday 9 at about 1710, 75 minutes behind schedule.

Another B744 flight, QF28 (SCL - SYD) is forecast to pull in to its gate at 1810, half an hour delayed.

QF23 on Monday 9 October departed SYD 59 minutes late at 1148, with a 40 minute late arrival at 1720 hours suggested for BKK.

QF11, longhaul from SYD to LAX commenced its pushing back at 1154, 64 minutes late; expected same day arrival is 0721, 51 minutes tardy. This may delay the connection to B744-operated QF11 to JFK.

The 1020 hours BNE - LAX QF11 (that meets up with QF11 and QF93 in the latter) departed 45 minutes late. Arrival same day is suggested at 0645, identically late.

QF81 departed SYD 76 minutes late at 1241, but so far an 'on time' arrival in SIN is still displaying. This is unlikely so it may be a case of the QF website not updating arrival time until the aircraft has levelled out a few minutes after takeoff.

The 1305 hours SYD - MEL, QF19, is delayed to an expected 1400 hours departure.

The overnight from PEK down to SYD (A332 VH-EBG on QF108) should be at its arrival airport gate at approximately 1503, 43 minutes late.

QF29 MEL-HKG departed at 14:20 instead of 11:20am today (09/10/2017)... expected arrival at 20:45 HKG time instead of 18:00

Sunday evening 8 October's QF9 departed at 0038 on Monday 9, 43 late. The intermediate stop in DXB was from 0742 hours (37 minutes late) to 0927 (22 late) but LHR arrival is estimated as 1350 hours, 20 minutes early, which was a point I made yesterday about a 50 minute late departure often being able to make up a lot of time, although it varies from day to day.

Sunday 8 October's QF12 departed JFK 58 minutes late at 1908, arriving LAX at 2150 hours, 50 minutes behind time. The A388-operated continuation then commenced pushing back in LAX at 2324, 54 minutes behind schedule, with Tuesday 10 October SYD arrival predicted to be 0807, 47 late.

A 75 minute late departure at 2315 hours was the order of the day for MEL-bound QF94 rx LAX; Tuesday arrival should be at 0845, 50 late.

QF16 to BNE departed in the wee small hours at 0005 this morning, 45 minutes behind. Tuesday arrival should be at 0634, 24 late.

Sunday evening 8 October's QF9 departed at 0038 on Monday 9, 43 late. As I've said before, you need to take FR24 and it's ilk with plenty of salt..especially if you're going to try to eke out a great deal of detail.

QF9 departed Melbourne at 0038 as you've said, but it did not arrive at Dubai at 0742. At 0740 or so, it arrived at the KR holding point (about 200 metres from the allocated bay), and it sat there for about 20 minutes, eventually arriving at the bay 26 minutes after touchdown. So actual time at the gate would be about 0804. At the 9,000' point on the descent, the aircraft left the STAR, and went directly to finals, carving about 10 minutes out of the flight time in one hit...only to have that taken away because the gate was occupied.

Thank you jb747. Enjoy your intermediate stop. FR24 shows landing, not at gate, arrival times.

As I remarked once before, for convenience (even though it almost always takes much longer at larger international airports with complex taxiing), I routinely add five minutes to the landing time shown by FR24 or other - sometimes airline - websites. It's not easy for anyone who isn't on a flight or at the airport to establish exactly what time an aircraft pulls up at its gate or its allocated position. Apologies!

Since that QF9 did not arrive at the DXB gate until 0804, that makes the truncation of the intermediate stop even more impressive.

Conversely on some domestic flights, landing to gate arrival might only take 3.5 or 4 minutes if I correctly recall.

Granted, actual arrival time at (say) LHR will also be somewhat later than I've allowed but on a total gate-to-gate basis, the entire flight (MEL - LHR, not just to DXB) will still have 'gained' on the timetable.

If you would like to suggest typical arrival taxiing times for DXB, LAX, LHR (and MEL and SYD for international flights) most welcome, and for those locations I'll routinely add that in to the 'rough' calculations.

The problem with any of the sites is that there is no consistent reason for the timing errors. I expect that FR24 is mostly, but not totally, using the transponder turn on/off times, but that doesn't always work. The transponder on QF9 whilst parked at KR would have been on, but FR had already decided the aircraft was at the gate.

On Wednesday 10 October, QF20 from MNL to SYD is arriving at 0755, 45 minutes late.

A333 VH-QPJ on QF62, the overnight NRT - BNE should arrive at 0729 hours, 34 minutes late.

QF24 (BKK - SYD) is estimated to arrive at 0802, 32 minutes tardy.

VH-QPB on QF130, the redeye from PVG down to SYD should arrive at 1026 hours, 56 minutes behind schedule.

QF118 from HKG to SYD is suggested as arriving at 1035, 35 late.

Due to the very late departure of QF29 yesterday, QF30 (A333 VH-QPI) will not arrive in MEL (ex HKG) until 1130, 170 minutes late. This aircraft is immediately returning to HKG as QF29. QF suggests that it will depart at 1230 but 1245 or later is likely given the typical 75 minute minimum 'reversal' for A330s operating international flights. Arrival in HKG should be just after 1900 hours.

QF23 to BKK is again projected to be late, with a 40 minute late departure from SYD at 1130 envisaged.
