Qantas Delays/Cancellations

The B744 (VH-OEI) on Tuesday 5 November's QF27 (1245 hours SYD - SCL) did not push back until 1425, so same day arrival should be 1210, an hour behind. This will delay the 1335 hours SCL - SYD (QF28) by a predicted 35 minutes in pushback with Wednesday 6 arrival in SYD at 1820, half an hour late...

Given the variables in transportation, it's rare for a prediction to be almost 100 per cent accurate but QF27 on Tuesday 5 November arrived SCL at 1215 hours (65 late) and as QF28, pushed back at 1430 (55 minutes tardy) for a projected Wednesday 6 SYD at gate arrival of 1820, half an hour late.

Wednesday 6th of Nov sees QF155 MEL-AKL (B738 VH-VZX) with a revised arrival at 00 08, 103 min tardy.
B738 VH-VXP has been delayed in the last 2 operating sectors: initially as QF815 CBR-MEL which arrived to gate at 17 17, 53 tardy. The subsequent leg as QF456 MEL-SYD had a late arrival at 19 27, 47 min tardy.
QF865 OOL-SYD (B738 VH-VYD) arrived at 18 47, 67 min behind schedule.

Wednesday 6th of Nov sees QF155 MEL-AKL (B738 VH-VZX) with a revised arrival at 00 08, 103 min tardy...

As noted a couple of posts above, this B738 left MEL 104 late this morning at 0904 en route to CHC, so it's had a net gain of a whole one minute all day.

And also on 7 November, QF12 (A388 VH-OQD) is arriving at 0900 hours, half an hour tardy. It is often the case that if QF12 is late into LAX from JFK, QF12 onwards and QF16 will be adversely affected.

QF1543, the super early morning 0510 hours (thanks to Queensland's stubborn refusal to introduce DST, at least in the southeast) BNE - CBR did not take off until 0630 hours. As a result, B717 VH-NXI should arrive at 0903, 63 minutes tardy.

The 0825 hours SYD - PER (QF575) did not become airborne until 0913. A332 VH-EBQ is estimated to arrive at 1103 hours, 43 late.

Much later on 7 November, QF479 (B738 VH-VXG) is operating as the 1845 hours SYD - MEL departed at 1909 but was not airborne until 1930. Forecast arrival has become 38 late at 2058 hours.

Colleague VH-VXR is on a preceding flight, QF477 (the 1815 hours up up and away at 1909 hours) so its at gate time in MEL should be 2023 tonight, 33 behind.

QF697 (VH-VYJ, the 1855 hours MEL - ADL in the sky at 1944) should be at its arrival gate at roughly 2021, 36 minutes past the schedule.

Also on 7 November, QF1 departed SYD 137 minutes late at 1917 hours, making the estimate of arrival at gate in SIN 2340 hours local time, 95 behind. Departure is then expected at 0100 hours on Friday 8 (65 minutes tardy) for LHR arrival at gate at 0725, 70 down.

Website FR24 is strangely showing Friday 8's QF7 (the 1440 hours mid afternoon SYD to DFW) as 'delayed' but QF is not. This may be an FR24 mistake, as the three A388 Sydney arrivals on Friday morning are all (at this stage) on time or very close to it. The flight monitoring websites are amazing, but not infallible.

QF418 (Friday 8 November 2019, the 0900 hours MEL - SYD) has got the axe.

This afternoon, QF444 and QF818, both 1530 hours departures, the first to SYD and the second to CBR are also cancelled.

QF448 (1645 hours MEL - SYD) has also got the flick, as has QF454, the northbound same route 1730 hours timetabled pushback. The 1815 hours MEL - SYD (QF474) is also not running.

Sydney is predicted to have winds intensify today to 45kmh while Melbourne is expecting possible hail so some of these cancellations may be due to ATC limitations.

In more on 8 November, QF61, the 0925 hours morning BNE - NRT departed at 1003, so delayed arrival is by half an hour to 1800 early this evening local time.

QF1 is having a sleepover in SYD. Will depart tomorrow morning at 8am.

So as noted above FR24 was incorrect about a 'delay' to QF7. Perhaps the Swedes got confused.

QF1 is showing as reaching SIN at 1310 hours on Saturday 9 November, 905 minutes tardy. It hasn't (publicly) shown the estimated SIN departure time (1440 at a guess) and likely LHR arrival (around the 2045 to 2130 hours mark if all goes to plan, assuming it operates the second sector.)

If so, this will mean QF2 ex LHR is delayed on Saturday night, and consequently QF2 ex SIN on Sunday night will also be behind time, perhaps a couple of hours in each instance. But too early to tell as it's way off from departing ye olde Sydney town.

QE2285, the Friday 8 November scheduled 1520 hours mid afternoon MEL down to LST (Q400 VH-QOP) was airborne at 1611 so mooted arrival is 1712 hours, 37 minutes tardy.

Southbound QF443, the 1500 hours SYD - MEL took off at 1546 with arrival for B738 VH-VZS to occur 31 late at 1706 hours.

Ahead of it is QF156, the 1405 hours AKL - MEL airborne at 1443 (VH-VZV), arriving at 1657, 42 late.

The SYD - CBR short hop, QF1515, has B717 VH-YQW with its arrival suggested as 33 late at 1703 hours.

B744 VH-OEJ on the Thursday 8 November QF64 from JNB to SYD is the 1850 hours that departed at 2047 and was in the sky at 2109. On Friday 9, it has held above Goulburn for a while so estimated arrival has blown out to 1718 hours, 103 minutes behind schedule. It is then rostered on QF25 (2135 hours HND-bound redeye) so that should hopefully be punctual.

QF486 (northbound 1515 hours MEL - SYD in the sky at 1609 hours) has also had to hold so arrival should be 1733, 53 late.

Most flights at SYD are arriving on runway 25 from the east, which is creating delays as aircraft hold. Winds are gusting to 56kmh.

With most (all?) flights using runway 25, delays are building ex SYD on Friday 8 November's early evening. QF569 (1655 hours SYD - PER, B738 VH-XZD) was in the queue for takeoff some time after 1800 hours, so should be at least 45 late in arriving at 1935.

QF1 won't suffer any further delays (unless something else random happens) as the QF7 has been cancelled tomorrow.

I think OQB might be out of service for a day or two.

If there is a silver lining, at least passengers on QF8 (the scheduled Saturday 9 November 1945 hours redeye from DFW to SYD) have plenty of time for the airline to make alternative arrangements.

Reports from QF7/QF8 passengers as to which flight(s) and when they are otherwise transported would be great. There must be many who connect at DFW to/from destinations/origins such as New York, Miami and so on. It's certainly a flight that DFW airport management love.

Give the amount of time, especially for QF8 passengers, I would say a good percentage of those will fly through LAX/SFO and network ops will no doubt be busy rebooking them now.

It may help that it's not school (or Christmas/Easter) hols as one might expect lower patronage with November historically one of the three lowest months for travel. Still, if 300 or 350 (or more) have to be rebooked I'm amazed as to how that number of spare airline seats can be found by a carrier so quickly on its/their 'own metal.'

I was on QF63 yesterday (VH-OEJ) and the plane’s APU failed right as we pulled into the gate in JNB. They had to use emergency lighting while we disembarked. I suspect that may have something to do with the return flight QF64’s delay.

Economy is the easiest cabin to rebook. Plenty of options on other airlines too if this is to be explored. W/J/F is a little bit harder to rebook.

QF8 on Sunday could be routed via BNE to uplift an extra 100 economy passengers that can't be taken when flying direct.

Using other airlines (particularly if not in the same alliance) is costly. I've usually found it's not favoured as the first option!
