Qantas Delays/Cancellations

I can report that QF43 has pushed from gate but hasn’t gone anywhere. QF63 is still sitting on the gate.

SYD is currently single runway ops. Taking off to the East. It creates congestion at the end of the runway near international terminal.

Lots of aircraft are circling awaiting a landing slot.

QF43 is back on the gate now. Short taxi out to runway before returning.

QF63 has filed a SYD-PER-JNB flight plan. I am not sure the reason many others would be better equipped to inform us. I can only speculate that they’ve had to reduce weight for the shorter runway take off at SYD due to single runway ops.

Does this suggest that freight (assuming there was some) was unloaded to reduce the number of ULDs if that's the correct term, or even that some passengers (and luggage) were (also) offloaded? All this takes time.

QF63 on Sunday 9 February is displaying as a projected 1900 hours SYD departure, but with a rare intermediate PER stop tonight from 2020 hours (to an indeterminate time since QF claims it'll depart PER at 2030 - not possible.) At a guess JNB arrival will be some time after 0200 on Monday 10, meaning tonight's QF64 will be unlikely to depart prior to approximately 0400 hours. A long night even for the minority with access to an airport lounge.

However an 0400 hours JNB departure then means that QF64 would be timed to arrive in SYD after the 2300 hours curfew had commenced on Monday evening.

No doubt Flyerqf has an instant solution. He's the oracle!

They would reduce weight through not having to carry as much fuel.

I don’t have a solution for a curfew. QF64 may end up being delayed a lot longer and arrive back Tuesday instead.

B789 (as recorded above) operated QF6002 on Friday 7 February, arriving BNE at about 1215 hours. Since then it hasn't operated any flights.

Is this routine maintenance or unplanned? It's a very new aircraft.

It’s operating the inaugural QF59 to SFO tonight.

It’s been out for a few days as they transitioned into the timetable. From 6 per week QF55/56 down to 3. This enables SFO rotation on 3 days.

QF99, the final passenger flight operated by VH-OEF (2nd oldest -400ER), has departed in Sydney. Take off was at 1950 nearly 3 hours late.

The second ex-WUH evacuees; flight, QF6032 departed DRW on Sunday 9 February at 1640 with suggested arrival in SYD tonight 2213 hours, 1713 minutes late as allegedly due to mainland China's "unhappiness" at Australia, departure from HKG was delayed by 24 hours.

Bundy Bear, if you look back a few posts, another QFd flight today (from OOL to SYD) diverted to of all places MEL.

I'm assuming that poor weather - mammoth rainfall - plus single runway operations in Sydney have made operations more difficult than usual. I've not examined the flight path microscopically but if it had a missed approach like the OOL - SYD one did, the Captain presumably decided to return to his origin. As you probably know weather is also very poor in OOL and poor in BNE (although don't say that to those on the land who've been experiencing a drought.

The BOM claimed it would not rain in eastern Australia until April 2020. Its prediction has turned out to be hugely incorrect.

QF3, Sunday 9 February's 1915 hours SYD up to HNL departed at 1936 but takeoff for A332 VH-EBN was at 2003 hours, so same day arrival is delayed until 0845, half an hour behind.

QF63 has pushed back and is on its way.

This late running Sunday 9 February QF63 (B744 VH-OEI) flight departed SYD at 1907 hours, 452 minutes late after the aircraft arrived in SYD on QF64 34 late at 1609. The inserted (not usual) PER stop is expected to be from 2024 to 2125 hours with JNB arrival on Monday 10 at 0145 hours, 550 minutes behind schedule.

There is still no publicly viewable indication (that I've tracked down) re the plan for QF64 given the curfew issue in SYD briefly discussed above.

UPDATE: By 2300 hours on Sunday 9, QF's site was advising that the Sunday QF64 will depart JNB at 1200 'high noon' on Monday 10 for SYD arrival at 0835 hours on Tuesday 11, 1020 minutes late. It might be unable to arrive in SYD earlier due to a lack of available peak period slots.

Saturday 8's overnight delayed QF28D was off blocks in SCL at 0735 hours on Sunday 9 morning, so Monday 10 SYD arrival is likely at 1150 hours, 1080 minutes behind the schedule.

I was watching the runway around 1710 - 1720 this afternoon while we were queuing for departure in SYD and especially at the middle section ad towards the E end of it there seemed to be massive amounts of water on the surface. It made really splashy water shows especially with the larger planes landing but would clearly have needed the full length with some. And made quite a slow acceleration for us, too. And the rain intensified further in southern parts of Sydney later in the afternoon and evening.

I'd hazard a total layman's guess that the BNE-SYD did not land due to risk of not succeeding within the length available.

Saturday night's QF25 that was delayed overnight to Sunday 9 Februaryq, departing SYD at 1529 hours not the forecast 1440, arrived HND at 2245 hours, 1185 minutes late. QF26 then departed on Monday 10 at 0048 hours so SYD arrival should be 1156 very late this morning, 141 minutes tardy. VH-OEJ is the B744.

Sunday 9's QF19, the 1225 hours SYD - MNL (A332 VH-EBQ on its third consecutive day operating it) departed at 1401, 96 minutes late, arriving at 1904, 94 behind. However QF20 did then not push back until 2212 hours - 192 minutes later than the timetable - so Monday 10 estimated SYD arrival has become 0938 hours, 198 minutes tardy.

QF36, the 1940 hours Sunday redeye from SIN to MEL departed at 2124 hours so at gate Monday arrival became 0753 hours, 113 minutes behind the timetable. A388 VH-OQD on QF35, the 1210 hours Sunday MEL - SIN had arrived at 1928 hours, 143 minutes late, explaining the delay to 'the 36.'

QF24 on Sunday 9 (A333 VH-QPH for second consecutive day) pushed back in BKK 18 late at 1818 hours but Monday 10 SYD arrival was 32 late at 0802 hours.

A333 VH-QPD on QF79 (see above) arrived NRT on Sunday 9 at 1933 hours, 113 minutes behind schedule, forming QF62, the 1930 hours to BNE that was in the sky at 2109. BNE arrival on Monday was 62 minutes tardy at 0742 hours.

Monday's QF142, the scheduled 0840 hours AKL - SYD is expected to depart at 1155, arriving at 1525 hours, 310 minutes late. On Sunday night, B738 VH-XZG on QF15, the evening 1855 hours MEL - AKL was airborne at 2022, arriving AKL on Monday at 0131 hours, 61 minutes late.

QF143 (0945 hours SYD - AKL) should depart at 1035 hours with at gate arrival 40 down at 1535 mid afternoon.

In more on Monday 10 February, B738 VH-VYC on QF416, the 0830 hours MEL up to SYD was not in the sky until 0943 hours, so arrival is at 1102, 67 minutes behind.

QF420, the 0930 hours took off from MEL at 1014 with VH-VYF. Arrival should be at about 1126 hours, 31 minutes late.

The 1125 hours SYD up to SIN (QF81) is forecast to depart at 1400 hours this afternoon, arriving at 1850 in the early evening, 125 minutes behind the schedule.

SYD had an incredible 162.8mm of rain in the 24 hours to 0900 10 February.
