Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF11, 789 operated, cancelled today. ZNJ still at DFW.

Hopefully coming week will improve as 388 is back to 5 per week on QF11, and from next week is goes to 6 per week. Further freeing up the 789.

Sunday : Happy New Year, well definitely not for those booked on QF11, and probably not for travellers on QF93 & QF27 today ...

QF93 MEL-LAX (B789 VH-ZNB or ZNH) has been delayed 3 hours until 14:00 AEDT, and QF27 SYD-SCL (B789 VH-ZNG) was shown as delayed at least 55 minutes - until 13:30 AEDT. However that time has passed and no actual sign of it on the flight trackers yet - New Years hangovers maybe - FlightAware alleges it took off on time, and FlightRadar24 hasn't been updated to match the Qantas Flight Status data.

The QF11 (SYD-LAX) cancellation while unwelcome, had to be anticipated in view of the earlier cancellation of Thursday's QF18 (LAX-SYD).

QF93 and QF27 both still on the ground. 93 still has an ETA of 1400 and 27 is showing as 1530. Both aircraft operated Antarctica charters yesterday.

Looks like QF27 may have returned back to gate.

While these would be arranged at least a year in advance, amazing that with its record of cancellations and unpunctuality that QFi can accept a request to operate these Antarctica charters.

Perhaps it does so due to fear of negative publicity if it decided not to accept such bookings any longer, but (my subjective opinion: appreciate others may differ), "flying over" Antarctica seems pointless with the only way to see it if one is so inclined (I'm not) to go by ship.

QFi has trouble maintaining punctuality and reliability (no cancellations) even at some offpeak times, let alone Christmas-New Year when passenger loadings are at their heaviest for the year with the exception of perhaps Easter.

The airline is annoying hundreds of not more 'regular' passengers yet allows day tourists (some of whom admittedly may use QFi at other times) to commandeer an aircraft for a trip where one doesn't even set food in a zodiac close to wildlife.

On Sunday 1 January 2023, QF93 (B789 VH-ZNB, the1100 hours MEL-LAX) took off at 1533, close to Flyerqf's suggestion. Same day arrival should be 1010 hours, 230 minutes late.

Not a great day if one is travelling to LAX via this airline from Oz as QF11 (mentioned above) is cancelled.

A388 VH-OQK is estimated to arrive LHR at 07607 hours, 52 minutes late.

'The 2' from LHR should depart SIN for SYD at 1950 hours local time (35 late).

QF19 has returned to Sydney, turning around about 4 hours into the flight, due to a power failure at MNL causing ATC issues.

QF19 has returned to Sydney, turning around about 4 hours into the flight, due to a power failure at MNL causing ATC issues.

'Philippine Daily Inquirer' says 56000 passengers affected.

GF154 (which was a BAH-MNL flight) diverted to HKG.

By 1600, media suggests the 'technical issue' had been partly resolved but 282 domestic or international flights had been affected.

PR210 from MEL to MNL (the 1020 hours) didn't takeoff until 1202 but arrived MNL 94 late at 1709 (so not losing much time enroute, just a few minutes) so this begs the question: if it could do that, why couldn't the QFi QF19? Lack of fuel in case a diversion was required?

PR212 (the 1145 hours SYD-MNL) took off late at 1237 but MNL arrival was only 18 late at 1723, so it gained time en route.

PR222 from BNE up to MNL arrived only five minutes late.

QF probably wanted to avoid a diversion away from home that would be harder to recover from if crew hours time out. Whereas for PR a diversion closer to MNL is easier to recover than returning to AU.

QF19 is taking off again at 2320.

Sunday : It appears that Monday's QF9 MEL-PER & QF10 PER-MEL are again going to be B738 operated. If as previously by a single aircraft, then Melbourne bound passengers will again face a near 6 hour wait in Perth.

Still Sunday : B789 VH-ZNE which turned around in Perth to operate yesterday's QF9 PER-LHR sector, had its pushback as the return QF10 delayed 40 minutes, with take off 24 minutes later. It is however currently shown as being on time for arrival in Perth by 12:25 AWST Monday.

As noted above, the PER_MEL sector will be 738 operated with Qantas Flight Status showing delay of 4 hours 45 minutes for an 18:40 AWST departure and 00:50 AEST arrival in Melbourne Tuesday morning. Overall delay between the arrival from LHR & PER depart is thus 6 hours plus.

Hardly acceptable given the premium fares QFi charges for many international routes.

It's not just the downgrading in seating, especially in but not limited to J, but imagine having to wait hours in Perth after a marathon journey from London, when all one wanted was to either get home or start one's Australian holiday in Melbourne? Then there's the impost on friends or relatives who have to be at MEL at say 0130 or 0200 to pick up the traveller(s).

QF19 is taking off again at 2320.

On Sunday 1 January, A333 VH-QPJ again took off from SYD at 2337 hours and has not long arrived in MNL at 0358 hours local time (0658 hours AEDT, 588 minutes late.

The overnight delayed QF20 is showing on FR24 as departing at 0505 hours from MNL, a bit optimistic. 0530 would be more likely. This means SYD arrival some time after 1600 hours today instead of the normal 0615 hours.

Monday 2 January's QF19 (1225 hours SYD-MNL) looks to be also formed by VH-QPJ at this stage, with pushback estimated at 1830 hours, 365 minutes late in the early evening.

Philippines at present has 33 flights each way per week, extraordinary growth thanks to a large Filipino diaspora wanting to go home for Christmas, with 5J operating 5x/week SYD-MNL (high capacity A333) and PR operating daily from BNE (A321) and both MEL and SYD (A333s). So QFi with daily SYD-MNL has a low market share of about 20 per cent, although that's better than markets such as Australia to KUL/TPE or much smaller BWN where QFi doesn't operate.

On Monday 2 January 2023, QF28 from SCL across to SYD (B789 VH-ZNG) is arriving at an estimated 1947 hours, 117 minutes late, a creditable performance given QF27 was 182 minutes late arriving at its SCL gate.

A388 VH-OQG arrived SYD as QF2 from SIN/LHR at 0721 hours, 71 minutes behind schedule.

QF23, the 1030 hours SYD-BKK has been good in its punctuality lately but today is not expected to push back until 1115 hours.

The SYD-HNL QF103 (A333 VH-QPH, 2040 hours 1 January) took off at 2209, arriving HNL same day at 1020, 55 late. This is its fourth consecutive day as QF103, with the previous three trips being between 57 minutes late arriving and almost two hours tardy. This route has extremely poor timekeeping, as it seems with a flight time of c.9.5 hours each way and most mornings overstaying in Honolulu, the plane cannot keep to the schedules.

VH-QPJ departed MNL on 2 January at 0527, so I was close to the mark: it then took off at 0546 hours. SYD arrival for QF20(D) is estimated as 1625 hours, 620 minutes behind schedule. This should hopefully result in today's QF19 departing at about 1830, the realistic QFi estimate.

QF23 on 2 January was airborne at 1136 hours, as the aircraft A333 VH-QPD was late in from ICN as noted above. BKK arrival should be at 1645 hours, 35 minutes behind, so QF24, the redeye returning to SYD will be similarly afflicted.

A332 VH-EBS arrived in MEL at 0015 hours on Monday 2 January as QF778 from PER, half an hour late.

However its next flight hours later, QF69 (0920 hours MEL-DEL) was not in the sky until 1031 so at gate arrival is estimated at 1725 in the late afternoon, 55 minutes behind the timetable.

QF43 this afternoon at a scheduled 1635 hours from SYD up to DPS is delayed in pushback by an estimated 100 minutes to 1815 hours, so Bali-originating passengers for QF44 will be similarly delayed on that redeye.

Flyerqf and 789nerd, why is B789 VH-ZNJ still in Dallas, USA?

It's been there since 1612 hours on 28 December local time, so approaching a full five days.

As one of you pointed out, it's apparently overdue for a 14 day long maintenance check in Singapore.
