Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Bad weather has just hit SYD and there is significant holding time for inbound aircraft. Delays outbound too and a change of runway direction.

VH-EBR was supposed to operate yesterday's QF51 BNE-SYD. It rolled to the runway but had to return. The day before it was also severely delayed operating QF51 as well

Eventually it got subbed out by EBO after midnight 13.5hrs after scheduled departure

What I don't understand is that EBO arrived into BNE from AKL at 1715hrs. It could have been pressed into operating QF51 much earlier than after midnight. Maybe it had some maintenance items that had to be attended to?

EBO was scheduled to operate QF15 but was swapped to QF51 due to EBR being unserviceable. EBS positioned up from SYD and QF15 departed late at 12:49am.

EBR lost on engine apparently while approaching BNE as QF52

It appears SYD as at 1130 AEST on Easter Sunday, 9 April 2023 may be down to one runway, the east west.

As Sunday morning is not peak period, delays on other flights may not be bad, but if the restrictive working continues, may build as the day wears on.

QF68, the overnight BLR down to SYD is arriving at 1144 hours, 99 late with A332 VH-EBP.

QF127 (A388 VH-OQL, the recently reintroduced 1035 hours SYD-HKG) departed at about 1138.

On Easter Saturday (8 April), QFi may have been an A333 short as taking off from BNE at 1857 hours, QF6016 (A332 VH-EBN) arrived in SYD at 2035 hours, having a whole five minutes to depart on time with QF103, the 2040 hours SYD-HNL. Not a normal situation, but creditable that QFi could at least find an aircraft, and crew(s), to operate rather than just cancel.

Naturally, takeoff was at 2248 with gate arrival in HNL at 1208 hours on Saturday, 103 minutes late.

Returning as QF104, the A332 should be at its SYD gate on Easter Sunday night (9 April) at 2102 hours, 142 minutes late. Often, QF103/QF104 spend excess time on the ground in Honolulu compared to the timetabled allowance. It's noticeable when the same A333 undertakes three return ('yo-yos') from SYD to HNL how by the third day, late running is frequently quite bad.

These two flights would have to be among QFi's worst for punctuality.

Also today (9), QF11 (A388 VH-OQJ, 1020 hours midmorning SYD-LAX) was not up up and away until 1223, so same day gate arrival should be about 0818, 73 late.

'The SYD-HKG 127' (see above) should arrive tonight, early evening, at about 1836 hours, 46 late.

A333 VH-QPA arrived in MEL on Sunday 9 April at 0857 AEST, only two minutes late as QF36, the ex-SIN redeye. It stabled in Melbourne before forming empty ('ferry') flight QF6017 up to SYD where gate arrival was not long ago at 2012 in the mid evening. Perhaps no pilots were available until 1800 or so in Melbourne to shepherd the plane up to Sydney?

Looks like it'll be forming QF25, the 2020 hours SYD-HND estimated to push back at 2130, 70 late. Another A333-rostered flight, QF103 (2040 hours SYD-HNL redeye) is predicted to depart 40 minutes late.

This morning QF25 arrived at Japan's Haneda at 0647, 82 late. VH-QPI is still there so is probably on 'the 26' southbound tonight.

UPDATE: A333 VH-QPD arrived in Sydney tonight at 1949, 39 late as QF148, the 1725 hours from AKL, and has formed QF103 that took off at 2133. Expected arrival at gate on Sunday morning is 1059 hours, 34 minutes behind schedule.

In a common scenario for QF1, on Easter Sunday 9 April, it arrived with A388 VH-OQB in SIN at 2120 hours, 10 minutes early, but did not then take off until 0016 on Monday 10. Anticipated LHR at gate arrival becomes 0714 hours, 39 behind.

On Easter Tuesday, 11 April 2023, QF1 (A388 VH-OQG) arrived LHR at 0730 hours, 55 minutes late.

Today's 1510 hours scheduled departure from Sydney is operated by OQK. It pushed back at just before 2000 hours, so was about 290 minutes late departing. This should mean LHR arrival tomorrow (local time) at not long before noon, assuming that the aircraft doesn't overstay in Singapore. Was this delay out of QFi's home base due to lack of a qualified running crew?

It took off at 2007 AEST.

Amazing how many international airlines not based in Oz can mostly run on time in and out of our nation, but QFi so often fails to achieve this. Yet passengers on QFi, especially in J and F, are often paying significantly more than most other carriers charge for the same journey, albeit in many cases via a different intermediate stop.

A333 VH-QPD on QF104 from HNL arrived in SYD at 1947 hours this evening, 67 late, yet it was only 16 minute slate at gate in HNL on the northbound QF103. Excess time on the ground in Honolulu is almost a fixture with 'the 103/104' rotation.

There's nothing wrong with Wednesday 12 April 2023 being at least the seventh consecutive day that A388 VH-OQL has operated QF127, the recently resumed post-COVID 1035 hours SYD-HKG.

If QFi believes this is more efficient rather than transposing aircraft that have come in from LAX or SIN/LHR, fine.

The timetable allows 110 minutes in Hong Kong to turn around (perhaps tight for an aircraft of this seating capacity, if full) but a more comfortable 170 minutes in Sydney in the morning. In theory, this should work fairly well.

However it's turning into the A380 equivalent of the problems that bedevil QF103/QF104 SYD-HNL and return, operated by ban A333 and regularly late even though there's a couple of hours at each terminus.

QF127 has arrived HKG in the last six days under half an hour late only one time, when it was at gate about 25 minutes late. Other arrivals have been between 48 and 229 minutes late. Today's took off from SYD at 1328 hours with arrival at gate suggested as 2012 hours, 142 minutes behind the schedule. Inevitably, this will see QF128 (the 1940 hours) not pushing back until around 2220 if past history is any approximate guide.

Yesterday afternoon's scheduled QF1 (A388 VH-OQK - see a couple of posts above) was in SIN on Wednesday 12 April from 0133 to takeoff at 0348 hours. Expected at gate LHR arrival becomes 1021 local time, 226 minute slate, so if achieved a marginal gain on the complete schedule.

Also on Wednesday 12, QF21 (B789 VH-ZNH), the 1245 hours SYD-DFW was not airborne until 1416 so gate arrival same day at 1442, 57 behind is the forecast.

OQL has a rest on Mondays. OQH operated QF127 on 10/4 and it was still 30 mins late departing but arrived HKG on time. The return QF128 was delayed 40 mins.

OQL is not being rotated through LHR or LAX as it is in the old configuration not refurbished.

Thanks: I incorrectly thought QFi was aiming to only bring back A380s that had been refurbished.

When will this aircraft receive that time in workshops? Are there to be other A380s reentering service unrefurbished?

On Thursday 13 April 2023, QF1 is again delayed, having taken off from SIN this morning at 0049 despite having been there (early) since 2120 last night. LHR arrival for A388 VH-OQB should be about 0737, 62 minutes behind.

The moral seems to be if you want to maximise the chances of arriving in London on time, choose one of at least 20 other rivals that offer one or two-stop services on the 'Kangaroo Route'. Usually, there's the ability to save thousands of dollars so it's win-win: better punctuality at less harm to one's wallet/purse/payment-enabled smartphone, and I'd suggest better service on board from many competitors of QFi.

QF12 (operated by VH-OQH) from LAX to SYD has a second consecutive day of delays, with VH-OQH not having taken off until 0258 hours yesterday, meaning at gate suggested arrival this morning at 1043 hours, 178 minutes behind schedule.

VH-OQL is again on QF128 from HKG to SYD, arriving shortly at 0927 hours, 162 minutes late. Very optimistically, 'the 127' (1035 hours SYD-HKG) is suggested as pushing back at 1105 hours. I'll be surprised if it isn't still at the gate at 1130 hours.
