Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Probably just delay until around 0830 and the QF2 will arrive early morning, instead of tonight.

This must play havoc with rostering, especially given cabin crew are based in London for the LHR-SIN-LHR sectors. If QF2 is badly late, QFi northwest bound can then be affected due to flight attendants not having had sufficient rest to make a punctual departure of 'the 1'.

On Saturday 22 March, QF10, the scheduled 1150 hours late morning LHR-PER took off at 1351 with B789 VH-ZNK. On Sunday 23, it is estimated to arrive at its PER gate at 1435 hours, 125 minutes late.

I reckon it’ll get dispensation if needed. They let an EK flight land at 12:30AM a few weeks ago.

The Federal Minister's delegate seems less inclined to refuse dispensation requests than was the case a few years ago, so you may be proven correct tonight.

While there are other factors he/she must consider (such as the number of passengers affected), this is an extract:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Section 20 of the Act provides that the Minister may grant a dispensation authorising a take-off or landing which would otherwise breach the curfew where the Minister is satisfied that exceptional circumstances justify the take-off or landing, this power has been delegated by the Minister to the department. Subsection 20(5) requires the Minister to make written guidelines about the granting of dispensations.

What constitutes exceptional circumstances

Primary criteria for assessment

Circumstances will generally only be considered exceptional so as to justify a take-off or landing within the curfew period if:

  1. they originated during, or during preparation for, the take-off of a flight scheduled to fly directly to, or to depart from, Sydney Airport; and
  2. they involve a delay caused by:
    1. unforeseen mechanical failure of the aircraft in relation to which the dispensation has been requested; or
    2. the offloading of baggage from the aircraft in relation to which the dispensation has been requested, which was required due to passengers failing to board; or
    3. the re-screening (for aviation security purposes) of passengers and/or baggage of the aircraft in relation to which the dispensation has been requested; or
    4. the circumstances are otherwise of such a character that they could not reasonably have been foreseen by the operator; and
  3. the operator has demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Minister that it has made every reasonable effort to avoid the need for a dispensation but was unable to make alternative arrangements to the take-off or landing.

The badly delayed QF2 on Sunday 23 March 2025 landed in SIN (with A388 VH-OQA, class leader) at 1104 hours (1404 AEDT) after briefly holding southwest of Changi. It should be at its gate about 1229 minutes late.

We are approaching the 1245 local time (1545 in Sydney) and no movement of VHOQA / QF2D at Changi.

By 1247 SIN time, VH-OQA as QF2D had started its pushback. It took off at 1301 hours SIN time. FR 24 claims it will touchdown in SYD at 0018 on Monday 24 March - obviously incorrect.

Also on Sunday 23 March, QF29 (A333 VH-QPG), the 1105 hours MEL-HKG took off at 1216. Gate arrival should be about 1806 hours, 31 late.

QF34 CDG-PER-SYD is delayed and whilst is looks like it will land before curfew, not with enough time to get QF73 out tonight. It is delayed until 1330 tomorrow.

Yes, it's arriving at 2157 at gate in SYD, 207 minutes behind schedule with B789 VH-ZNJ.

You would hope that a result from any curfew dispensation request would have been known prior to departure from SIN and the aircraft routed accordingly. Although that may be giving to much credit.

Sydney airport website had ETA of 2315....

I think QF would normally hold the aircraft if they don’t have dispensation. No advantage having the passengers displaced in MEL or BNE to holding them another 7 hours in SIN.

A very slight change. QFI's flight status and FR24 suggest it'll depart at 1340 hours on Monday 24 March from SYD for SFO.

On Sunday 23 March, A388 VH-OQA on QF2D arrived SYD at 2315 hours, 1005 minutes late.

On Monday 24, it departed with QF1, taking off at 0650 hours. SIN arrival is estimated as 1121 hours, 856 minutes behind the schedule.

I wonder whether they have the QF J and F Lounge open earlier than usual.

Just arrived at SYD for tonights QF11, 3 hours before arrival. Told we can't check in as there is an engineering issue, but to return at 4pm. Any ideas if a flow-on impact from LHR, or otherwise? Aircraft appears to be VH-OQI, possibly one short from rotation with QF1 and QF1D departing SYD this morning.

Separately seems to be an issue with QF63 - showing runway delay of 3 hours on FlightAware.
