Hi,

Qantas is flying direct between Peru and Australia next week for a repatriation flight
and I'm curious any airlines have flown direct before.

Cheers,
Tristan

Solution
Probably not. Though distance wise it is now possible, per GCMAP:
LIM-SYD 7960 miles BNE 8120 miles
PER-LHR 9009 miles

Both too far to be wandering (non-stop)

How much does IFE actually cost for a flight?

Not sure where I saw it, but there is another thread on AFF with the costs - what seemed stunningly high costs - whether QF are in the air or not. The have turned off IFE and WiFi on all flights to reduce bleeding precious cash for the foreseeable future.

Edit: Found it Changes to inflight service and offerings

Qantas 747s have flown to Lima before as part of Captains Choice RTW charters.

Not sure they've ever flown non-stop from there to Australia. They often stop at Easter Island.

I was booking for a family member and the Qantas agent at the call centre said it was direct...
I have never heard of that, but maybe they are testing capabilities?
I don't want to split hairs but in my understanding, a "direct" flight is not necessarily a non stop one. It could be a one stop flight where the flight number does not change - Direct flight - Wikipedia
I'm not saying that the flight to Lima in non stop ( likely) but just stating the facts re the definition.

I assume that's because the tour that was chartering the flight, desired this to visit the island? Otherwise seems like it would be an expensive place to refuel!

Based on a great circle map, it looks like AKL (or CHC) would be a reasonable fuel stop, but I realise that winds aloft can significantly change this route.

The flight ended up going ahead non stop on a 787-9 Dreamliner, departed 3 hours late,
but was otherwise uneventful, limited-service etc and the plane was half empty.

Yes, as a scheduled stop on the tour. Sorry if my post implied otherwise.

The Captain's Choice charters generally make a stop at Easter Island even from South American cities where Qantas has had non-stop RPT flights.
