Interesting fact. I upgraded from whY to J ADL-SYD today from 5C to 2C. My colleagues are travelling with me (still in whY) so I asked if I could let them have my 5C seat and was told that the new seating policy reserved that seat for WP/SG...

On Qantas 734's, 5C is as good as 2C for seating in pitch if not width.

Of course, the 2C catering would be somewhat better.

Being a CityFlyer flight, the 5C beverages would cost the same as 2C beverages.:D

P.S The lady at business class check-in before me received an op-up to business. :( Bundy Bear was also on this flight in business class on his return from New Zealand.

First domestic flight for quite some time!

This flight was completely full, even in J; I highly doubt there were op-ups. When I changed seats at OLCI, all of row 4 save for 4A was blocked/occupied. No C or D seats were free until about row 7.

O/T I know - would be interesting to know whether that 2 mins she beat you by made the difference (supposing you were both in the frame for an Op-Up and she just got there first). Alternatively whether your O fare (and potentially equivalent QFF status) was always going to be trumped by a non-discount Y fare.

The Op-Up gods know.

My guess is the timing would have made no difference. My original seat allocation of 27J would indicate that I was way down in the pecking order for op-ups. But then again you never know.

Does the post below mean your "luck" is changing?
I wouldn't say "luck" is changing. Boarded and took off 20 minutes late on Monday morning although still got to Brisbane on time. Bundy Bear could not believe it as he was already to go to the boarding gate on time but I told him to relax as the flight will be late.

All I was trying to say is that Qantas domestic is a far superior product to what is offered by the other 3 carriers. And in saying that I do not necessarily agree to all the recent changes especially allowing in-flight mobile phone services and allowing pre-selection of seats for domestic flights.

79-82% of all airline flights don't arrive on time... It's going to happen on about 1 in 5 flights.
Story of my life. Always late everywhere I go.
Maybe since you are a "late person" (like me), you can expect the flights not to arrive on time? Then, if it does, it's a bonus.

For my flight MEL-BNE the other day, once again I only left the MEL J Lounge about five minutes after the first (and final ) call was made, and once again when I walked out of the QP and looked at the FIDs it was T-14 or so but the status of my flight was shown as "Flight Closed". I couldn't decide whether I needed to relax, run or change my underwear.

When I got to the gate - surprise surprise - there was still a line going into the aerobridge. I was duly boarded...

FA: "How are you?"
Me: "Oh, I think I have a bit of a stitch. I ran for this flight - it said 'Flight Closed'."
FA: "Heh...oh well, you've still got at least 5 minutes" [motions to the line out of the aerobridge]
Me: "You guys [referring to when at MEL] have a nice reputation for doing that [hitting 'Flight Closed' rather early]"
FA: "Yeah, but it gets you all here quickly, which is what we want, even though you'd have spare time, especially if you have a bag on board."
Me: "Some of us know that - which is why we 'always' have time for a couple more beers!"

...I remarked as I proceeded down the aerobridge.

Needless to say, the look of amazement on the face of the FA was incredible.

This would indicate approx 4 in 5 flights don't arrive on time.

I agree that some of the flights will be late. For a while there I think my on time record was <50%.

Very true. I expect all my flights to be late and occasionally I get to my destination early.
