Qantas Fare Rules - Changing one flight of a return

Hi all

I’m just seeking some advice if this is correct per the fare rules.

I have a same-day domestic return flight (MEL-BNE)

Outbound - is Red e-deal
Inbound - is Business Sale

I want to move the outbound to a flight earlier, fully understanding the $99 fee plus fare difference.

However, online qantas.com won’t allow that - it forces a change of both legs and reprices the inbound fare to current non-sale rates even when not changing it.

Is that correct? Change one flight you have to change them all?

Yes that is correct. You won't be able to re-price just one leg of an itinerary that is changed, the whole ticket will be re-priced at current fares.

This is why I book only ONE WAY tics in Australia

Despite technology that ought allow airlines to have terms and conditions for each separate fare class they resort to most restrictive fare class for all segments

One other idea is to just CANCEL the first leg. I understand this is allowable with ‘return’ tics

Yeah, this sucks. Similar problem applies when booking Classic Rewards & Cash fares on the same (domestic) ticket.

I made that mistake once and the Hobart call center was nice enough to waive any fees due to that mistake, although these days I can't get through to Hobart even as a WP.

Do you mean you changed the Classic award dates and the cash fare, which remained unchanged, was re-priced at current fares?

No, it was paying the cash fare change fee ($99) even though I wasn't changing it. Was more a general comment about getting caught out by mixing fare types, when there's no reason to on domestic.
