I have never actually flown Premium Economy at all so I'd love to know if it's worthwhile paying for over Y.

Perhaps if you're lucky Plat1 could organise a special downgrade on your next flight to give Y+ a whirl

I have the same problem ex-Perth (business class).

SQ - ~ $7500
QR - ~$6500
EY - ~$6500
CX- ~$7800
QF/EK - ~$9-11000

This is not random dates. I travel every 4-6 weeks and this is the continual cycle. Needless to say QF/EK doesn't get my business.....

The QF "business saver" fares typically have the leg from Dubai to Lhr/Lgw and back in economy if they are cheaper.......

QR Appear to have a business promo on. Fares from around $5,100 return

FWIW - I got BA Y+ GVA-SYD via LHR for 3300 CHF which is about 4400 AUD. Company policy at work and corporate discounts, I saw much higher on expedia.

IMHO it definitely is. The seats, albeit recliners, are wide and comfortable with decent legroom. And the service (at least in my experience with QF) is top-notch. The meals are basically the same as domestic J.

Looking at booking J class fares on QF to FCO/LHR in about July 2017 and at the moment,they are coming in about $14000 for two.
Do you think there will be another sale and possibly better prices.Been told best prices are 4-6 months before you travel.
Should we wait and see what promotions come up?

Whilst it's hard to be certain, $7k is about the "going" best rate with QF recently.

I booked MEL-AMS-LHR-MEL via QF, cost was mid 7s booked about 3 months out.

For July that would be an "expected" price. If you're happy with it, i'd lock in your preferred dates etc. The risk in holding out, is availability of preferred dated and/or price rise. You'd be lucky to see a reduction to much under $7k i'd have thought.

Agree re pricing for QF Y+. I purchased SYD-LHR for May next year return in Y+ and it was about $3,600 each, purchased the tickets in the Premium Companion Sale back in October. Was really happy with the fares, but had to be very flexible with dates to secure this fare. Some routings were via Melbourne - the extra flight on top of 23/24 hours flying time didn't appeal.
Current sale is around $3,500 each person which is great too.
I have flown QF Y+ a few times, really enjoy it. Service is on a par with J (I think), and the food is excellent. Wines are typically from J too. Seats are comfy and good for a person like me (6'4").
Have also flown CX Y+ a few times, similar seats, but the service and food is nowhere near as good as the QF product.

I think $7k is about as good as it gets with QF for J. I snagged $6,990 in 2013, and have never seen below $8.3k for my travel dates in last 3 years.

Agreed. Haven't seen fares any less than that in a fair few years. My last few J fares booked 3-4 mths out and outside sale periods have been $8.5K or greater.

Your other option is use points to fly to London
then book a return ex Europe back to Australia. This can come in at 30% - half the price
or book fare to Singapore HK OR BANGKOK and fly from there
or AA miles or something or other

Really? I thought one-way tickets are often quite expensive (>50% of a return ticket) or are x-Europe fares an exception?
That's great to hear as I've only got enough points for a one-way flight to LHR later in the year and will need to purchase a return flight.

Seems very reasonable. For Jul/aug 2016 best fares I saw were $7,500 in J in a companion sale about 3-4 months prior to departure, after the sale ended the price went to $8,200, which suggest Qantas discounts J sales on AU-EUR at about 10%. At present fares are at all times low, but have been around $7,500, so unless oil prices drop further or there is further slump in travel to Europe for whatever reason, at most they would go to around $6,800 (IF forward bookings are low).

Also, if your itinerary permits, try to book the return leg originating NOT from LHR, But from another European airport (connecting in LHR), reducing the fare by about $300 (U.K. Passenger departure tax).

That's great to hear as I've only got enough points for a one-way flight to LHR later in the year and will need to purchase a return flight.

Theres some airlines who offer one ways at decent cost.
However, my comment referred to ex-Europe return tickets as they are definitely cheaper from that end...
