Can't guarantee that all of the information below is correct and like with everything concerning Aviation, it's subject to change:

QFlyer - Qantas

First aircraft set to depart the Qantas fleet as soon as this weekend!

:(

Why, when both 767-338ER's are the exact same model, does one have less J and less Y seats than the other? I can understand if you have more J seats you'd have less Y, or the other way around. But not a decrease in both.

Millennium vs Dreamtime seats in J IIRC.

So if QF replace 3 744's, what do they replace them with? The only new aircraft I am aware of are a bunch of 738's (or similar)

Not that I know what QF's purchasing or order book is like though...

I like the 744's and the 767 fleet...

The A380s are the replacement, good to see the ugly sisters go!

Although it would seem VH-OEB may be around for a bit longer after it's recent freshen up inside and new paint job (One World logo)

Was my understanding that only two of the three were going at this point.

Excuse the newbie question, but I've seen mention of the ugly sisters several times here - I know they're 3 of QF's 744s (-4H6s, yes?) but why are they known as the ugly sisters? And are they less preferable to fly on than any of the other 744s in QF's fleet?

The original interiors were different to the rest of the QF 744 fleet and hence they were originally known as the three ugly sisters. However, they underwent full interior refits to the QF standard.

And I think I'm correct in adding that the interiors were different because 2 of the 744s (both of those that are imminently leaving the fleet) came to QF via Malaysian Airlines, and the other via Asiana Airlines (or at the very least were originally fitted out for those airlines).

I can understand the older 763's and some of the 744's going, presumably replaced by some A332's and A380's respectively, but with the 787's still a long way out, what happens if the airline industry in Au takes off again in the near future ? A380's can only handle large trafic routes, and the A332 is more Asia/Pacific type distance and PAX capacity.
Interesting..............

Cheers Dee

The ones on the way out do seem to have been replaced (or are about to be replaced) by something. On top of that, I suspect that aircraft utilisation is still down from where it was, so there is likely some scope in there to increase utilisation again.

This would be my assumption based on Alan Joyce's comments about Qantas' ability to significantly increase capacity at short notice if required.

I have noticed a few more tweaks in Syd/Mel/Bris with a couple more flights coming online recently from a winter hiatus which is positive to see. And of course the normal xmas / summer holiday madness timetable!

Importantly they also had unique engines and both the ex MH aircraft developed airframe issues as a result of poor maintenance. OED left Australian soil today for probaly the last time as QF107 and will fly to the desert (VCV) after returning to LAX as QF108 for JFK.
