Most of my recent flights (MEL-Syd, and mel-bne) have been on 767, but recently got a 737-800 and the difference is AMAZING - so much quieter, seats HEAPS better.

The sooner the 767s are updated or gone, the better.

I love the 767, but it's time to go.

I have to disagree. I lump DJ/QF 73H & JQ A320's all in the 'only if no other option basket....They are are all the same and feel likebus. Like another poster commented, they are only good if you can get the middle seat blocked off which I can usually score on QF

I have flown twice now on the refurbished 767's, the first time I got on and thought I'd stepped into an A330 by mistake, its amazing how great they look with all the new cushion fabrics and I didn't know they were putting in LCD's so that was a bonus too.

Yes - Agree there. I much prefer a 767 any day to a 737 or A320 - Although I still prefer A330's over all of them!

For me, A320 (JQ/TT) beats B737 (DJ/QF/O7) EVERYDAY! This is how I see it -

  • Seat width (on occasions when I have to put up with someone next to me) A320 is still somewhat comfortable, B737 is not.
  • Pitch (fly DJ for best lottery results, TT for $25 for online seat confirmation at booking, JQ/QF to do the right thing at check-in for QF FF Platinum).
  • Seat comfort/padding, fly JQ, QF (head rest wings on QF for longer flights) O7 (cloth seat version) avoid TT/DJ/O7 (leather seat version) if you don't want a solid plank for back support.

Do any of 767s now have PTVs with IFE or AVOD? SYD-CGK and SYD-MNL are very long flights to spend with just a central TV screen.

I have been thinking about stopping over in MNL on one of my SE Asian trips but would rather travel SYD-HKG-MNL or MNL-HKG-SYD to avoid the 767 on this route. To spend 8 hours in WHY in a 767, refurbished or not, would almost be torture.

The international (25J) config with Dreamtimes have always had PTV with loop for J cabin. None have it for Y cabin.

Thanks, that is not too surprising.

Considering the majority of travellers are in WHY I wasn't too concerned with those unlucky enough to travel business class but rather those lucky enough to travel WHY. ;)

Note that when the current JQ A330-200s return to QF mainline, they will be operating domestic and trans-Tasman (well, that is sort of domestic) flights. So although they will allow the retirement of some of the 767s and 743s, its not going to help with MEL-HNL.

However, I do expect we will see shiny new 787s with orange stars on the tail on the HNL route long before we see anything new with a red roo on the tail over there.

Interesting you should say that. There is some rumours that when the 787-9's arrive they will be going in the JQ fleet, and the -8's will be swapped into the QF fleet.

All I could find officially from Qantas was that they would be used across the group in the most profitable way.

I know Continental does the milk run to Guam but I don't think they use a 737..

Continental fly in and out of Cairns twice a week and do indeed use a 737 (to Guam and then Honolulu) under their "Micronesia" banner...it's a night arrival and departure in/out of CNS, which is why you rarely actually see the aircraft...

Whilst I am a huge fan of the wide body, dual aisle aircraft, I dont mind the 737-800's, albeit this is for short haul only.

What I would like to see is the older 767's in the QF fleet to be updated, even just a little bit. The flight down to MEL from SYD yesterday morning in VH-OGG felt like an old school bus. I must say it was amusing seeing some peoples reactions (I am thinking not too regular travellers) try and stow there carry on bags which normally fit in the overheads bins of newer configured aircraft wheels in first, scratching there heads wondering why they wouldnt fit in the old square type overhead bins... ahhhh, sideways young grasshopper.... miracle, it fits.

Then only an hour or so later fly back to SYD on a shiny new A330-300 in J class (Skybed seat) MEL-SYD then onto HKG so intl config. What a difference.

I don't mind the Qantas 763's ...

- except for the ex BA ones! (rego VH-ZX ...) I literally groaned out load when I realised that one (and now two) have been refurbished, so Qantas expect them to be around a lot longer (I believe they were to be returned to BA in 2006 but delays in new aircraft delivery coupled with increased PAX demand put paid to that  ).

Here we go someone putting more silly thoughts into my head.

So I can get from SYD-CNS on a 737 and then a Continental 737 from CNS-GUM-HNL. Does this then continue on to mainland USA?

I must love torture after the current trip....

Most of the obvious (CO, UA, etc) airlines flying in and out of HNL to the US mainland appear to use 757 and 767 aircraft.

However, you MAY be able to get to the mainland on a 737 by taking ALOHA AIRLINES from HNL to somewhere like Oakland CA. They appear only to have 737s, both old and new generation if their seat maps are anything to go by on their web site. ;)

...more on ALOHA...in the Wikipedia article they have 25 737s at Jan 08. That's 10 old, plus 6 cargo plus 9 NG 737s. Average age of fleet 17.9 yrs so better book onto a newer one!

Can't be bothered re-reading the whole thread but somebody mentioned the 767's being refurbished with LCD's etc, i notice that 2 of the ex BA lease units have new fabrics (and i assume LCD's etc) so would seem they will live in the fleet really for a few more years yet.

Yep, we won't be seeing the end of all of them for a while yet.

Suggesting an old 767 could be mistaken for an A330 is a bit over the top. Sounds like something a QF stooge would say, trying to find a positive spin in what can only be described as a very negative situation. New interiors on planes that are up to 22 years old is simply putting makeup on a pig. This 787 delay really sucks for you QF loyalists.

I'd only take a QF 767 if there was no other option. They are simply too old. :)

Well, at the moment QF have to make do as best they can with what they have got, and a cabin refresh is one way of helping out. Obviously it is not an ideal situation, but what else could they do?

..especially when the QF loyalists are rewarded with yet more waiting and watching as DEATHSTAR scores the first batch of INYOURDREAMSLINERS over the supposed premium brand :!:

Eh, let QF, the supposed premium brand/product, use the newer and partly brand new 330-200 fleet? Oh yes, can't do that because JETSTAR has to be run on a shoestring and can't accommodate aircraft that have unnecessary maintenance costs.

Eh, lease some newer aircraft as a stop gap measure (compensatory deal from both SCAREBUS and BOEING, perhaps) - no, Qf would rather have the cash and guard its profit so Geoff et al can have a bonus year of a few extra million bucks in their greedy deep pockets.
