Possibly for weather also - big cold front coming (hit VIC last night).Started descending about 40 mins after take-off. Wonder why they didn't return to AKL?
A Qantas flight from Auckland due to land at Sydney Airport this afternoon has issued a mayday call.
Emergency services are on stand-by as a precaution with the plane reporting engine trouble.
Flight QF144 left Auckland just after 2pm local time.
The plane is currently flying over the water and is on time to land about 3:30pm EDT, according to a live flight tracker.
