QANTAS Frequent Flyer Benefits whe you first start

Can someone please help me with what benefits you actually get by becoming a qantas frequent flyer on the starting level.

From their website it only appears as though you get benefits once you move up in levels

You earn FF points on eligible flights on QF, oneworld partners an othre QF partners.

It is only as you move through the levels that you become a frequent flyer an thus get benefits of status.

Welcome to the forum. If you haven't already joind QF FF, consider joining the Qantas Club if you intend to do a lot of domestic flying. QF FF is included in this and you get the benefits of free beer and wines in the QC and free canapes and coffee. As you move up the tiers to gold, QC membership is free for the qualifying year. As simongr said as a QF FF member you accumulate points and status credits(which enable you to move up levels if you get enough of them in a year).

You also get to be on the Qantas Frequent Flyer mailing list and will be invited to enter competitions and receive other spam mail such as invitations to apply for credit cards.

You get preference on waitlists over non QFF/oneworld FF's (I think this is an unpublished benefit?)

Might be useful to know that only AU and NZ based memberships have to pay a joining fee.

My partner is in the army and has moved to Darwin so it will be worth joining and putting all the points from the flights to some good use

People will correct me if I'm wrong here, and I may be getting my wires crossed.. but I have a feeling travel paid for by defence is like government employees in that you can earn SC but not points?

Yeah thats probably true but I was talking about flights that I pay for to go up there. Im sure the defence force isnt going to pay for me to go there every month.

Even Qantas Club members get "some" preference in seat allocations. For eg. on a 747-400, a QC member can have access to rows 70-74 (ie to those paired seats) whereas a Nuthin' Bronze does not.

My parents flew to LHR last year on points and are both NB's. They simply asked for row 70 after they had booked online via a phone call to QF. This was about 7 months out, they got the seats no problems.

Then I guess each persons MMV , probably I had a unhappy? QF associate on the telephone a couple of days ago because I wanted the those 2 seats for me and a mate, she said I could have 72a but could not give my mate 72b since your mate is a NB.
