Qantas hand luggage weight

Has anyone else noticed qantas are now weighing hand luggage at Sydney domestic airport prior to security screening(<10kg)? Is this a new policy?

Noticed that for the first time this afternoon too. Interestingly they only wanted to weight my suitcase, not my country road duffel, which was probably heavier than the suitcase.
 
Yes, happened last week as well. Two pax before me were turned around and sent to check-in their carry-on luggage.

This is an enhancement that I DO NOT want to see in practice...
 
Virgin were doing this at BNE yesterday morning for several flights.
 
They were weighing it in PER today at the T4 security line. My suitcase came in at 10.5kg and was waived through. No interest in weighing my backpack. I wonder if they were also weighing at the T3 security checkpoint (it's all the one terminal anyway).

Good... I think QF should do more enforcement on this, at the very least for size (or people with more than 2 bags). Some people really do take the p!ss with how much they bring onboard.

This weighing seems to happen semi-periodically though (and has for a few years now) and nothing ever changes... maybe they survey average cabin bag weights periodically or something?

There was no recording of the weights for a survey. You were either over or under. Also there was only weighing of trolley bag, no weighing of laptop bags, handbags, backpacks etc
 
I was also pinged last week too, had to only put my bag on the scales, I knew it was a tad over as I had collected some booklets from clients, so held the bag when putting it on the scales to read 9.9kg. Worked a treat, I was in J on an A330 so there is always lots of space in the overhead bins. 737 is always dreadful.
 
The bag weighing was happening today in SYD at the main security area and only on the premium lane. My bag was not weighed as when approaching the main area the premium and the general lane were quite full. I just walked past and went through the other screening point which is not always open, there were 3-4 PAX behind me and then the shutters came down. Bag weight was not a consideration I just did not want to stand in line when quicker options were available.
 
My sister had her hand luggage weighed last week in the premium lane at Sydney domestic. She kept on complaining to me about the surly attitude of the Qantas staff.
 
My wife was 800g over on trolley bag going from Syd to Cbr on a Dash 8 they insisted she checks bag in even though she was going to do gate check! She was not happy having to wait at the belt for her bag to arrive...
 
I agree, size and number of bags is the issue, as overhead storage is tight on full flights.
I would argue we need to do away with overhead bins. If you need to bring extra luggage, check it in. Some will point to the time taken to wait for luggage at the carousel. Fair point. But consider the time wasted during boarding/deplaning with passengers figuring out where to store/retrieve their overhead bags. If it was all underseat storage the whole process would be quick. Now I know this is a radical suggestion - not even RyanAir or EasyJet has proposed this but I think it would go a long way at easing congestion.

Plus there is never a wait for luggage at the carousel anyways. After all, you could just pop into the lounge and head out later by which time your bags are waiting for you.
We complain about priority boarding not being enforced, perhaps some rigour around carry on size and weight would speed up boarding also.
The rules being rigorously enforced is an issue. I know ways to dodge the JetStar carryon checks which come in handy if you are on a Starter fare. But it’s not the weight that is the issue in my mind so much as the size. Some of the things I’ve seen people try to stow away in the overhead would blow your mind:

Exactly (within reason). You'd be struggling to get a 'standard' carry-on case of more than 12kg - believe me, I've given it a nudge!! (I note QR allows 15 kg across 2 pieces for J, so theoretically 15kg in one), so just make the limit 12-15kg which will prevent lockers being broken with gym weights being taken on board, but monitor the size. There are already size measuring things at most gates anyway.

# I don't fly prop planes, so Dash-8s may genuinely need less in the overhead lockers (assuming there are some!).
