Qantas hand luggage weight

I would argue we need to do away with overhead bins. If you need to bring extra luggage, check it in. Some will point to the time taken to wait for luggage at the carousel. Fair point. But consider the time wasted during boarding/deplaning with passengers figuring out where to store/retrieve their overhead bags. If it was all underseat storage the whole process would be quick. Now I know this is a radical suggestion - not even RyanAir or EasyJet has proposed this but I think it would go a long way at easing congestion.
Efficient use of space is another reason they do this. Having the overhead bins full saves maybe a couple of containers down bottom. Thats more freight instead and more money.

Realistically there's not much else you can use the space above you unless you radically change plane seat designs. Also the new overhead bin designs are a fair bit bigger and as we transition more into them, they'll be less of an issue with space given both Boeing and Airbus' new bins can fit a bit more than 1 carryon size trolley per pax.
