One other thought: what was the flight number of that first flight on your ticket? If it’s a European airline like AY (for FinnAir), IB (for Iberia) or something similar then EU261 comes into play since you are flying a European airline to Europe (even if the airline operating the flight isn’t European). In such a case you could claim downgrade compensation which can be quite lucrative as it is based on a percentage of the entire fare:

Ultimately, you need to ask yourself if it’s worth the hassle of fighting this. What’s 40 minutes on a slightly larger seat to you? I understand the whole principle of the matter aspect but you also need to look at the forest from the trees, too. If you wanted lounge access as you don’t have frequent flyer status, guess what that’s something you can ours Qantas to give you in Canberra and chances are they’ll do it. After all it’s not your fault you’re seated in economy even though you were booked in business

Air passenger rights - Your Europe
Travellers' rights - flight delays, cancellations and overbooking (passengers unable to fly on flight they booked)

I resent such accusations!I'd bet only one of you will admit it though!
