Qantas Hotels - Seriously WTF?

But this is all in Australia, I would not trust Qantas hotels internationally and for chain hotels it is almost always cheaper booking another way.
Not always, I needed a hotel in Chicago in 2023 and it was over AU$500 cheaper to book my stay at the Fairmont via QF Hotels than it was to book direct even with the Accor member discount. (plus got to pay in AUD).

My preference is to book direct but if if its not a chain I have benefits with I will always check whether the QF hotel rate is the same (or better) before deciding who to book with. Of course I will check that the hotel exists and reviews on trip advisor etc as well.

I also booked my Dublin (non-chain) hotel last year through QF Hotels to avoid paying any foreign currency conversion fees given the rate was same, with all the same benefits as booking direct.

This is the biggest draw for me as well.

BTW any recommendations for the best way to contact and get a good result out of Qantas hotels? One of my many tasks for this coming week.

I have used the 1 300 738 206 number with good outcomes on several occasions @RSD .
When they couldn't help recently, was put through to Qantas sales who sorted my reservation.

Yes I now have an added task upon return to Australia

Despite booking hotels the night before or a couple of days ahead all over Europe I ran into a serious snag last night

Over several days got messages like these in 2 forward bookings
IMG_2314.jpeg

Tried to do the Live Chat only to be logged out. Then with the unusual activity message even though their own Rewards tic booking into/ out of Morocco is on my flight bookings list

Anyway, told no one available on live chat sighs
And like try calling them from this place with NO SERVICE
Perhaps they could modernise and get a WhatsApp etc channel arranged ??

So then I couldn’t book with them

Meanwhile, couldn’t pay online with the CC card as I needed an SMS Passcode on the Australian number and there’s zero mobile service in Marrakech. Gah and still no service here in Casablanca

Eventually went to the actual hotel website
IMG_2493.png

Beat rates my foot. The QF Hotels rate was a lot lower … so no cigar here either
However, I could reserve a room by using the exact same CC number so at least that was a HUGE relief

However, the railway OCNF needed war and peace about the PAX And then the SMS passcode so no train booking

At the railway station today, tics purchased on contactless card. So go figure, there’s a solution for everything.

So I don’t know if this is a QF Hotels issue or the Banks but until now hasn’t had any problems other than the MISSING hotel points… from mid to late June.

🤔🤔🤔 I was in Morocco two weeks last year including in those cities and everywhere I stayed had really good wifi and had no problems keeping up with email, bookings, WhatsApp etc and my ANZ Visa worked fine.

I didnt use Qantas hotels however as I had pre planned overnight stays.

All the above work fine

CC contactless use on the ground works a treat (sometimes needing a PIN like todays hotel checkin)

So whether it was the wifi at the reputable but down an alley Riad or the no mobile service inaccessibility by Optus or Q hotels or the Cc card I don’t know.

As you say, hotels wifi generally very good. As it is here

Just got off the phone with Qantas hotels - they are going to investigate the address problem and for some reason they are going to ask the hotel for compensation before they agree to refund me some points (my hotel booking was made with points rather than $).

I would follow through @RSD if you aren't happy with their response - keep us posted.

I will keep you posted. I thought that it would have been something that they should have been able to sort out on the spot, but it was the call centre in Manila so I guess that I shouldn't have been too hopeful...

Well it seems that QFH don't want to admit fault and are blaming the hotel and have refused my request for a refund of the points for my first night's stay - cranky pants email sent back to them with a screen grab of the map on their website showing where they show the hotel to be - and a red X showing where the hotel actually is - 9.6km due south of their location - given the language barrier and everything else in the middle of the night I am damn lucky it only took nearly four hours to find the place!

From looking at the code, it looks like Qantas Hotels passes coordinates (30.516281, 103.992002) to Google Maps for display, not the address. As noted previously, Google Maps displays this with an offset due to the obfuscation of map data used in China mentioned earlier, but this doesn't explain the 9.6km offset you're seeing (it would only cause a few hundred metre offset)

I will note that even Google Maps' own POI for this hotel is in the wrong location: Hyatt Place Chengdu Bio-town · GX8R+GR6 NO.2 HUI GU, Xiyi Rd, Shuang Liu Qu, Chengdu, Sichuan, China, 610200

It looks like the hotel's coordinates listed on Expedia (and therefore QF hotels) is just plain wrong, and it's flowed through to Google Maps for whatever reason.

On the hotel's own website, the location pin is also <1km off but still within the general vicinity of it (probably due to GPS obfuscation).

However, the address is correct on all listings. So, to what extent should a hotel be liable for a dodgy coordinate input if the address itself is correct?

In terms of avoiding this, especially where there is a significant language barrier (like China and South Korea), I like to:
  1. Find the native language name of the hotel. Google sometimes lists this, but if it doesn't, go to the website and switch the language and it will show up.
  2. Punch that name into the native navigation app (e.g. Baidu Maps or Naver in Korea)
  3. Check that the addresses match. If you can't read the foreign language, usually a good indicator is if at least the same street numbers are present.

I will see what QFH reply. I used the map feature on Qantas Hotels to look for the hotel that was as close as possible to the factory that I was visiting and one chosen was just a few hundred metres away according to the map, and I said to the factory people that I wouldn't need transport from the hotel as it was just a couple of minutes walk... wasn't impressed to find out that I was actually staying 10 k's away! I might as well have not changed my booking and stayed at the hotel that was 22,000 points cheaper that I had originally booked!

I am happy to report that QFH have now accepted and have returned the points for the first night of my stay to my QFF account. Just have to wait for those 5000 points per booking etc etc to flow through now...

Good outcome for you @RSD but it shouldn't have been that hard.

No - but at least it is sorted now. I've got points claims in for 2x CX flights that haven't been credited - hopefully they will but I don't know the booking class so who knows at this stage, and QF are still pondering over my MU flight seeing as how the Missing Points page throws a wobbly when you put Jinan in - so I'm glad that at least one thing has been sorted out - it was getting to the point where I was going to have to start a spreadsheet to keep track of all my various point claims.

I will add - the Hyatt Place Chengdu Bio-City is actually a rather nice hotel - once you find it. Rooms are spacious, bathroom is a good size, the breakfast buffet was very well and widely stocked, all staff were great etc. Unfortunately it is on totally the wrong side for the panda sanctuary.

Bracing myself to follow up the 3 or more bookings with missing points this coming week
Be strong young jedi and hopefully the force will be with you!

I'm still waiting for them to credit flights for my MU flight, and am checking my account several times a day for the first of five hotel stays to credit - and the first of three of the 5000 point bonuses too - unfortunately I never thought to do the cheap indo booking thing that some others d
