Qantas' Impending Change to Tokyo Flight Schedule

They lose it and VA gets another shot at applying 😜

With a new VA, this time the E190s on order will operate BNE-CNS-GUM-HND and every passenger will get a free green tea kit kat.

Ok jokes aside, QF can apply for an exemption/extension to their slot or launch a "new" route/flight, sure they said BNE was moving but they don't have to do that.
I see the map for the 321XLR can do BNE <> HND range ;)

First XLR this year is due to JQ but the IASC allows subsidiaries so I guess technically we can get a JQ up there but make sure you slap on a QF code and make it bookable via the QF website for good measure.

JQ could easily shift a NRT flight over to HND if they needed to slot sit

Sure could but at the same time I don't think they're too concerned, slot is open to an AU based carrier who can operate it.

At this stage we're left with just VA (who's now passed) and the QF group both of which are the only two unless you look at Skytrans (and their new A319) or some other operator willing to make their aircraft have multiple stops on a new route to Japan

They could, but they won't. JQ is at NRT because of the GK hub there.

QF has had the HND slot since Feb 25. In their application, they said that they would be using it from Mar 30. The determination said that the slot had to fully utilise the capacity no later than 30 April 2025 or such other date approved by the Commission.

If they don't have flights using the 3rd HND slot by the end of April, IASC is going to be asking questions, unless QF asks for an extension.
An airport and time change could be a significant inconvenience for many people, though, with only a month's notice.
More inconvenient then a flight being cancelled with an hours notice?

The ISAC approval specifically says JQ can operate it. No need for QF code.

Does anyone know why this decision by Qantas is taking so long as to me the decision is really not "rocket science "....Yes new crew arrangements need to be made but other than that I cant see what the issue might be !!!

They may have applied for these slots without a plan on how to resource them. They're currently having to wet leasing plans from Finnair so they obviously don't have enough, so they may have found themselves in a position of not having enough planes and crew.

That means if they want to keep them they'll either have to enter another wet lease or cut a route somewhere else. That might be proving hard to do.

seems to me that substituting haneda for narita doesnt require any more resources just a change of airport

I was going to say this.

If it’s just a swap from NRT to HND, you’re probably not needing additional resources, you’re just redeploying your existing resources elsewhere

If they were planning on doing something as simple as swapping the airport over, you'd think they'd have done it by now.
It'll cause disruption to people with connections and so more lead time to sort it out would be better.

Unless they're trying to exhaust every other option before resorting to an airport switch.

its just an airport switch....MEL-NRT becomes MEL-HND....can't for the life of me see what issues Qantas faces with this rotation ??

My point is more that if that really is so simple or that's their plan, why haven't they just done that? Why leave it to the day before to make the change when every day that passes more people will be making connecting booking for dates over the next year that'll all have to be rebooked (or possibly refunded)?

I think if it's their intention, they're keeping in the back pocket as the last option if they can't do anything else, or they'd have just done it by now.

Only thing I can think of is ground handling provider issues and getting the morning departure time they want (ie, not 640am).

They are reducing/removing NRT (depending on what they do with 59/60) and increasing HND. I think they have differnent ground handling providers at each, so they need to deal with that. Not just a matter of asking the ground company to move staff from NRT to HND.

Have read on a.net that the slot co-ordinators for HND allocate times for the carriers with HND slots. Thus when QF applied for (and got) VA's old slot, it wasn't necessarily VA's old times they received as VA's old timeslots were allocated elsewhere to other carriers.

Have QF pinned their wishes to the one slot timeframe or will they be happy to get what’s given?
