Qantas Increases Legroom Charges; Changes to Row 4 selection on most 737 flights

So I have my first domestic 737 flight tomorrow. I could see early on via EF that presumably a CL/P1 was in 4A plus shadow (4B blocked).

At T-80 I nabbed 5C/D for SYD+1 and I but could see 4CDEF for $35. Pass.

Prior to OLCI opening, peeps grabbed 4D and then another 4F. Presumably they were happy to pay.

When OLCI opened, 4A’s shadow was still firmly in play and 4C/F were free to select. Pass.

But for solo travellers, a CL/P1 could be your new BFF.

Oh, BTW - I’ve noticed a “Claytons” shadow. EF shows 5B vacant (not blocked) along with many other seats that are otherwise showing “taken” on QF. I can’t select 5B nor can SYD+1 but both SYD+1 can select 5E and we’re both WPs.

Another data point. If you're checked in but not issued a BP (due to needing to goto service desk to sight documents), seat selection is still regular paid seat selection.

Probably against my better judgment, stumped up row 4 on this Thursday's PER-BNE redeye, as I really need to get some semblance of sleep on QF's woefully inadequate 738 overnight offering. Have got the upgrade request in though - if I do later get the upgrade confirmation, can I expect a refund for the extra payment for the now not needed row 4 seat?
That would be a big QF NO!

Ooh roo

This has always been the case not just for row 4 but also exit rows. Nothing has changed in this regard.

T-24 managed to check in online and grab 4a and 4c as soon as available.
4B is blocked for the time being, hoping it stays that way due to status.

Also with the few samples I've seen. T-24 is now vicious. You don't have long before it's snapped up.

Seat 4B taken by someone else, who was nice enough and willing to switch to 4A.

Middle seats in Rows 5 - 9, both sides empty.
That was my recent experience SYD-BNE-SYD. Row 4 full, despite some obvious CL/P1 shadows in play but we took 5C/D at T-80 and had vacant middle seats both ways.

Has anyone else come across this? For me, this is the straw that has broken the camels back.

Logging into the app I went to select my seat for my flight to Canberra this week. I went to get the priority seat in row 4, only to find that Qantas has introduced a new $20 cost for Platinum Frequent Flyers now wanting to sit at the front of Economy or an exit row. I could not believe my eyes.

How miserly and pathetic. Is this the Qantas reward to a Platinum Frequent Flyer, who has stuck by the airline thick and thin for the last 15 years? A pathetic $20 cash grab?

Another T-24, another swiftly selected row 4 seat.

I imagine this will be the new game now. With a few people sprinkled here and there willing to pay. It does make it a lot more competitive as its much easier to calculate t-24 than t-80 mentally.

It's more competitive likely because people will naturally check their seat selection whilst checking in, and people will check in once they get a text/notification from Qantas that their flight is open for check-in (which will happen at T-24)

My only real surprise with this change is that it wasn't done years ago.

Reality is on an aircraft the constraint is mostly floorspace and that's what you pay for - ergo first and business class are more than economy (plus a few $s for better food and bev).

It only really advantaged those Plats 'in the know' about T-80, whereas on many flights there would no doubt be a lot more wishing they had those seats.
