Qantas International Business fares - just not in the game

I think the difference in F Fares, Long Haul is a little closer.

Due to my last minute booking style, I probably pay more than I would if I planned my trips. I never look around at what other carriers are offering. I tend to fly Qantas most. I jumped on some EK, F fares last year which were too hard to pass up. LGW - SYD return in F for around $6k AUD. 777 LGW - DXB. A380 DXB - SYD. I purchased several Return and have used 4 already.

I personally would not fly J long haul as I think it is a bit of a rip-off. My son now has a strict J policy (Dad funded) since he turned 18. I have sat in the J seats on a QF A380 when chatting with my son. I can not believe anyone could sleep in them as you can feel the different segments of the seat and they still seemed to be on a slight angle. I also don't think the wines and meals are of a particularly high standard. (for the price)

If I were on a budget which allowed only J fares, I'd probably look at CX and EK before QF.

EK - J on the 777 is not much better than J on the QF A380

First class - Heaps of difference

I recently tried F on EK on the 77W from MEL-AKL-MEL and was very impressed

Once EK puts the A380 on the MEL route they will be getting all my business in First for Europe flights!

Followed closely by Singapore on the A380/77W in J

I've got to agree with bossreggie on the issue of QF seat comfort.

The old J seats on the 747 are now so bad (iron bar across the a*rse) that a cushion is required. I had better hopes for the MkII but was very disappointed. They are marginally bettter, as perhaps the foam hasn't been compressed by 1000's of business buttocks, but still not a patch on other carriers for comfort.

QF still offers a decent plonk in J, it won't take the enamel of your teeth and has a bit of character. You do have to go First however for something memorable.

Agreed. The QF Skybed is style over substance and has no shoulder room either. I have never had a decent sleep in one really. In fact the off the shelf SICMA seat VA uses is probably more comfortable, as is the old SQ Spacebed. QF vino in J has always been very good especially the NE Victorian Muscats but that isn't the deciding factor for me. Leaning toward SQ for Rome I think as Changi T3 is always a comfortable layover.

I am sometimes a little nervous about QF whites (reds always excellent) - too often the combination is Riesling or Chardy - and I prefer to drink neither of those.

I don't find the SKII bed uncomfortable but can't stand the slope on the SKI - ok for a 10 hour day time flight but not acceptable for 21 hours or an overnight - if overnight I would be aiming for CX - preferably new CX J for the ability to stream from the iPad to the IFE screen - but I am happy with old new CX J - the coffins give me privacy.

I can sleep on a Skybed Mk I even with the slope. It takes a bit to find the right position, but the technique is quite simple.

But if you can't feel comfy in it, then that's that. I also don't suffer from the supposed "bar" effect some people are having. Seeing as I'm quite a bit on the plump side of the scale, would this have anything to do with it...

Personally I do not like herringbone at all. I'd rather be in a real coffin than in a CX J coffin for sure. I can't sleep comfortably in a herringbone seat because it always feels too humid at the level when you sleep, and CX doesn't make it better by not providing an air vent. Also not a fan of VS for this reason (and some other reasons). Not sure why but with NZ Bus. Premier I had a better sleep with them despite their herringbone seats.

I sometimes travel with a little battery/USB fan because of the no air vents situation on many airlines. A bit cough maybe but it adds to the comfort.

I'm currently booking a 2 day / 1 night trip to the UK next month - 2 adults SYD-LHR-SYD in First.

Booking QF31 & QF32 with Qantas comes out at $38,766 AUD.

Booking BA7371 and BA7372 (i.e. the exact same flights) with BA comes to $25,677.

Yup, techique involves quite a few reds and a very large scotch. It takes a lot of practice, but once mastered serves for life.......

This one worked very well for me on my last AY BKK to HEL, woke up just before Helsinki and my seat was only halfway down... But I did have a very good sleep (or coma) :-)

I really though Qantas had learnt it lesson, that is what happened to me in August, see my comment early on, & they were now compatible with BA, but from what is said in this comment obviously not

I used to do all my overseas travel on the back of AONE4 and ACIR22 fares, but since my daughter was born I've been trying to cut down on the amount of time spent away from home. Sadly that means running up against the minimum 5 days overseas and 2 stopovers rule of the OneWorld fares - where previously I wouldn't mind a detour through New York on my way home from a trip to the UK, now I'd prefer to turn around and fly straight back home again.

Which of course means I've been recently looking at QF return fares in both J and F, and I too am becoming amazed at how expensive they are in comparison to the other carriers.

I'm looking at a 2 day trip to the UK next month for my wife and I, and a return SYD-LHR-SYD J fare with QF comes to about $23K. Alternatively I can jump on an Emirates A380 in First with their brilliant suite product and take the same trip for $25K...

What is the Emirates J fare then?

The more I see of men........... the more I love my dog
