According to Information on Qantas for international flights

Economy:
1 x 115cm (45in) bag or
1 x 185cm (73in) non rigid garment bag

and according to Qantas Carry on Baggage based on Country Specific requirements

Passengers may only carry on one bag plus a personal item, such as a purse, briefcase, backpack or similar, per passenger.

I normally fly domestically with a suit/garment bag and a rigid hand luggage but I assume this isn't possible.

I was hoping to just fly with hand luggage as I'm only in the US for 4 days, and was wondering if I could take a garment bag and an overnight bag like Myer Gifts Online - BLAQ overnight bag in Navy ?

Any help from experienced fliers would be appreciated.

Thanks,

PN

Carry-on for Flights to/from/within the USA come under a special (US Federal) law.

I have travelled extensively with a 115cm rollaboard with a lap-top bag with no issues.

In my opinion if your 'overnight bag' is no larger than and, perhaps, looks like a laptop bag or briefcase then you would have no issue.

Doubting the Myer Bag complies.

See this thread for some ideas:

Have you got any domestic flights within the US or are you just flying from Oz to West Coast USA?

Looking at the Myer link above I note that what you're looking at is a duffel bag whereas I'd probably opt for a carry on bag with wheels just for convenience because it's easier to tow. I know what I'm like with collecting inflight mags of various airlines, tourist info brochures etc & all of a sudden my carry on has become a lot heavier.

Makes no difference in respect to USA federal LAW.

Carry-on for flights from/to/within the USA are regulated in all classes to one bag (e.g. 115cm rollaboard) and/or one personal item. There may be exemptions for those with special (eg medical) needs.

On some domestic flights in the US eg SEA/SLC on a CRJ hand luggage that is normally taken onboard bigger aircraft had to go undernearth in the hold. The airlines refer to it as a la carte or valet service whereby you wheel it down the aerobridge & leave it at the front door of the plane so they can put it underneath in the hold.

At your destination the bag is retrieved from the hold & put on a mini conveyor belt up to the aerobridge where you retrieve it as you walk off the aircraft.

Done that many times myself - the fact is each time I ended up on board with my laptop and nothing else.

Thanks for the link. Appears that my suit bag which is fine on DJ/QF domestically is slightly too large for US criteria so I'll take my rigid rollaboard and take along a laptop bag for additional storage even though I won't have my laptop with me.

I'm also flying Alaskan from LAX to SJC and back.

I was considering the carry on as I knew my rollaboard would be too large as a personal item, but now that I can't take my suit bag I'll take my rollaboard as my regular item and my laptop bag as my personal item.

I also tend to take along some reading material etc so it's good to have the laptop bag with me and the rollaboard can go into a luggage locker.

Thanks for the info on the "a la carte" service - I'll also take along a padlock in case they want to put my rollaboard into the hold for the internal flights. It's just a little turboprop plane.
