Qantas introduces complimentary alcohol for economy passengers on all flights

First, I would hazard a guess there was an increase in retail alcohol sales - because lots of people are drinking from home rather than going out. The total consumption probably hasn't changed - there's been no news stories of alcohol panic buying - the breweries haven't run out of beer, major spirits are still being imported, wine is plentiful (and helped by the China blockades).
I agree with this other than generally one can afford to purchase more booze per $ at Dans/Aldi/Etc. than at a licenced restaurant.

So what do I spend the excess on? TV's perchance! ;)

I was thinking, if Economy is getting free wine and beer on all flights - and they still aren't serving spirits in J - then effectively the beverage service is the same in both classes.

That's pretty terrible.

Yeah sure you might get slightly better wines in J and you get it in a glass, not really enough of a difference if you ask me.

Surely the J are getting more drinks and better/quicker service though. Not as though the Y pax can order much more than 1 or 2 on most flights whereas in J you can easily get double that if you want

I wonder if its been a soft roll out on some routes as I got it on some Tassie routes - just thought it was a very positive 'blip' (!), but then saw the announcement and realised it may already be rolling in?
JustinBrett hit the nail on the head. That's based on sales.

I know my consumption has increased in line with 500%, but it's all medicinal...

I don’t really care about the why, I like the end result - which is a nice benefit for all who want to take advantage of it :)

Which is nearly a bottle a day! Which is a bit above the recommended intake, I think!
Well, pre-covid i'd meet my friend for a drink maybe once or twice a week, and we'd finish a bottle of nice red between us. Covid time, we went to daily afternoon meetings, exercising our arms on a park bench, with consumption increasing towards 2 bottles a sitting. Since she died, well my consumption hasn't really changed.

Pretty sure there would be a number of similar stories.

If we want to be more reasonable, two schooners on Friday arvo after work turning into 2 a day??? An increase in sales...

I'd suggest a bottle of wine a day is not a good idea.

To set the record straight (well it is a Channel 9 article) this article says household spending went up $270 for the year of 2020 to $1891. That is a 17% increase.

Probably have lots of stock to use as it approaches the 'Best Before' date.
The DiGiorgio Cab Sauv on the QF Wine website includes the following in the product description:

"The cardboard box you receive the wine in has a warehouse sticker on it (we use this to help us manage the wine in our network) and these mini bottles have a Best Before Date of 1 May 2021."

My question is: how does this wine have a best before date – doesn't it just keep maturing? Hold old can it get?

Or is it simply a retail protocol for such catering businesses, so they can't be sued by those who think they've somehow managed to acquire food poisoning (same as supermarkets)?

I certainly don't mind purchasing miniatures to relieve them of stock, especially since I'd enjoy them at home. But, what's with this May 2021 date?

Most wines have an expiration date. Only expensive vintage wines are designed to be stored for long periods and even then have to be cellared properly.

Anything in a mini bottle is not going to keep. You’ll probably get a couple of years beyond the expiration date before it becomes undrinkable.

But have they accounted for the fact people were spending on booze for at home in lieu of booze at restaurants?

I've pondered this question with my 747 cart, and that I don't really drink white wine. My conclusion is porosity in plastic bottles. The Grant burge is in glass.

Simple messaging really...

It's Qantas just re asserting their position as the premium carrier while the competition is still working out what they are going to be.

It certainly doesn't help, but glass isn't foolprool (I think it has something to do with bacteria on the inside which turns wine into Vinegar).

I've had a full bottle of red about 3 years past the expiration date and it was pretty much pure vinegar. Gross (unless served on hot chips).

I agree about the hot chips. :)

Alcohol turning to vinegar is an oxidation reaction, so get any air in the bottle and it's not going to last. I'd hope the wine maker is using clean/ sterile bottles. there is a bacteria or fungus that you can get in cork...
Of course, the bottles are not 100% air tight, so there is no avoiding oxidation. It's just about slowing down the process - cellaring etc.

An expiration on wine is pretty misleading since any decent wine will be kept to get bottle age.

just on QF 793 from ASP- BNE.The flight attendants are very helpful and confused in relation to the alcohol scenario. I’m happy to PAY for a beer but I have been informed it’s not possible . Am I reading the thread right?
