Qantas & Jetstar revealed as first airlines to fly from WSI

Don't know but I do wonder how WSI will compete on landing charges. Airlines are known to play hardball and now they may have an alternative to leverage a better outcome in SYD?

Like we suspect Vietjet and AirAsiaX did with MEL, leveraged AVV to negotiate better outcome with MEL. TBH, I think that's the biggest benefit of AVV, it sort of keeps MEL in check (although not completely due to MEL's geographic advantage).

The other one is QLD's WTB. While it is 160 km from BNE and on the other side of the dividing range, I wonder how its existence is affecting BNE.
Cathay Pacific has had a freight route there since the inception, so there is at least some freight demand. I understand it's partially agricultural exports from the region.

If a Melburnian could please explain to me what the difference between Melbourne Tullamarine and Melbourne Avalon airports I'd love to hear it. Both of them involve a lengthy bus ride to/from the CBD. Both of them feature substandard terminal design and both of them have JetStar as a main tenant. If anything Avalon has the upper hand in the sense that fares tend to be lower there than Tullamarine.

Also I don't think you can bank on there being no curfew at WSI forever, likely those westies will eventually start complaining like the Nimbys near SYD and one may get imposed.

From a passenger flight point of view, probably insignificant. More competition from OOL and MCY both about 110km by road from BNE.

You have never been to Avalon have you?

I don't do FB groups I only interact with people I know personally on FB.

Plenty hear agree that WSI is of no benefit to me/them personally and will continue to preference SYD.

It wasn't until mid 90s that the areas in which WSI services were even considered part of Greater Sydney. Penrith and Campbletown were long distance call areas until the 04 prefix was commandeered for mobile network.

So anyone beyond Marrickville in your opinion?
Or anywhere beyond Sydney Cove 1788?

Don't worry, you don't need a passport to go to those places. And you don't even have to stop there with the M7

Australia is unique in that most infrastructure projects finish on time and under budget from the Sydney Harbour bridge to Northconnex.
Ok, we have a new definition of the geographical extent of Sydney or maybe Australia?

I reckon QantasLink will operate connectors between Mascot and Western Sydney
It would not be fair for the people at BWU

Population density map - melbourne growing mostly South, east and north (and some densification in west). Existing population centre in east and south.

Map shows population density.

Red circle top left is MEL (well connected, closer / easier travel time from population density).

Red circle (in fact off page….) is AVV so further again and even less developed transport options. Add also crossing west gate bridge over Yarra which nearly all west and south traffic has to use (ie surface transport choke point) and AVV isn’t a compelling option for greater % of the population.

LOL now you are just being silly inner west stops at Strathfield.

But anyone who genuinely thinks Western Sydney is on the whole wealthier than City, Lower North Shore, Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, Inner South and Northern Beaches obviously not living in the real world. Median incomes and median home/unit prices disprove that instantly.

What's not living in the real world is the assumption that anyone living west of Strathfield can't afford anything other than LCC airlines.

Which has not ever been stated on this thread by me or anyone else - you made that leap all on your own.

The core customer base for LCCs is those in lower socioeconomic areas (which in greater Sydney are predominantly in the west and south west) but that does not mean that everyone living in those areas is a lower income earner. I acknowledged that earlier.
