Quick question - I notice that JetStar operates one flight right now that departs from the international terminal of MEL but is domestic service (i.e. JQ15 from MEL to CNS). I'm wondering if one would have access to the QF lounges if taking such flights?

The reason I ask is that I reckon it could be exceptionally good value to book one of those tickets for 120ish dollarydoos and then proceed to spend some quality time at the Qantas First lounge (e.g., as a Qantas World Platinum member). And with the reliability and on-time performance JQ is world renowned for, I wouldn't be particularly surprised if one was able to spend many hours at the lounge or better yet dip their toes several times in the lounge thanks to a fortunate cancellation.

Yes, Platinum get access to Qantas First Lounges if open at MEL, SYD & SIN before a Jetstar flight.

Note that Jetstar international checkin generally opens only three hours or less before departure at MEL & SIN.

I did that once. Was never tempted to do it again. The extra time to do check-in, security and immigration was not worth the lounge visit.

But presumably it wouldn't take too long as a QFF Platinum member? Also I thought there was a special system for those travelling domestically on an international flight where you can bypass immigration? As for check-in presumably there isn't much of that if you are flying HBO.

Your QF Platinum counts for absolutely nothing when travelling JQ with the only exception being lounge access. You won’t have access to JQ J check-in counters or Express Path (if it’s even operational).

If you want to save time and can travel HLO this will give you more lounge time. If you need to drop bags you need to remember JQ International check in opens 3 hours prior to departure so if the queues are long this can eat up a lot of your lounge time.

I thought for Domestic from International terminal you always needed to visit the desk for a paper boarding pass anyway? I think it's so they can affix the special sticker.

You still have to queue at normal check in along with everyone else to show your ID and get your boarding pass. Then queue for security and then queue for immigration. On arrival, you then queue at the immigration counters and then queue to exit customs. Too much effort for me and not worth a fancy plate of food and a drink at the lounge.

And when JQi (and JQd if departing from an international terminal) flights finally once again allow online and kiosk check-ins, if HLO, check-in can be a doddle.

You still have some of the international processes and restrictions to navigate.

If you book a connecting QF domestic flight before the international JQ flight in the same booking that takes away all the JQ check in issues as QFd interlines with JQi.

Ah yes of course the orange D sticker on the boarding pass requirement will get you.

While I did it when Qantas had more of these legs around, I ended up thinking like this. Just thought it was a bit of a rigmarole...

Do you know who I am? 😂

Is there a current list of such flights? I’ve only done QF9 and QF5 from MEL and SYD respectively as domestic hops to PER. For me it is definitely worth it with HLO. I didn’t think it took that long to get to the Flounge - 10 or 15 mins perhaps.

Try searching MEL or SYD:
