Scanning also helps when passengers are missing, the scans show last known location. Did they get on the transfer bus, did they go into a lounge, that way they can start trying to find people and work there way from there.

I have noticed that when I exercise my Plat "arrival" lounge access, they do not not scan your BP at all; just sighting it seems to be enough. Not sure if that is a general practice?

Another data point: have just entered toe MEL J lounge after arriving from SYD earlier; just flashed my (printed) BP and was waved in with no problem.
