Hi, guys
I am looking for a return flight between Sydney and Singapore on 1st Sep and 10th of Sep. As it is an overnight flight to Sydney I want to book business class instead. I tried to book both economy tickets and there is no upgrade option on the confirmation page as there are still availability for business class. Does that mean I could only pay more for two one-way tickets?
I tried to search other destination and there are upgrade options to LA on confirmation page.
Thanks!!

Both QF2 and QF82 on 10SEP show some availability in Business. However QF2 is very limited (ie: no D or I inventory). QF82 looks better for J.

Thanks, but can I book mixed cabin tickets for a return flight? Two one-way tickets are more expensive.

I have never managed to achieve this with the exception of trans Tasman, recently booked business max with JQ from Singapore for this exact reason after returning from Europe on a reward flight. It will be interesting to see what it’s like, but cheaper than Qantas economy one way and can use the lounges. Also business class status credits / points.

FWIW, I could get BA to show a Y over, J back fare ($2897) using the '+CABIN 2' extension code on the return leg on ITA Matrix (fare basis is ONNT30S4 and RNNC30S4), but QF only offered J in both directions for $6.9k...

(J both ways on BA is $3955)

Yes - but not on the Qantas website. You need to make the booking through the call centre. Be sure to ask the agent to waive any call centre fees since you can't do it on the website yourself.

Edit: See this support page here -

"Mixed class bookings for Domestic and International travel cannot be booked online. Mixed class bookings must be made by our Contact Centre."

....because we cannot be stuffed upgrading our terrible website even though many other airlines allow this

Called qf today, Hobart team answered the call. They said it’s impossible to book a mixed cabin return flight. They offered two one way tickets instead or I have to use points to upgrade. I hope I could get upgraded with WP status. ☹️

Hi, I was wondering if I can book mixed cabin round trip tickets from Sydney to Tokyo, economy to and business back. As I need to contact the call centre, will this also incur an addition fee? Cheers

Anything you can't do on the web site mention when you call them and no fee. But they do need reminding which is poor in itself.

This will be possible if the economy and business fares allow combinations on a half round-trip basis. It does appear the current fares between Sydney and Tokyo for QF do and so you'll need to call in to get someone to help you do it (or maybe go to a Travel Agent).

Not relevant to this case but do bear in mind that at least some QF fares do not allow such combinations. In the past, I have encountered QF fares that only allow economy fares to be combined with other economy & premium economy, and business fares only with other business & first fares.

UPDATE: My bad - it appears that none of the business class fares that are combinable with the economy class ones are available for sale currently, which explains why the Economy & Business combination in a roundtrip isn't possible. Really sorry for the misinformation!

Do you know how to check this or what to look for? Can I check it myself somewhere (ExpertFlyer maybe)?
Yes you can. In ExpertFlyer, you can go to the Fare Information, enter the origin and destination cities, along with dates and the carrier, and get a list of their available fares. The combination rules are usually available under the Combinations section if you click on View Rules under the relevant fare.

The bit that you are looking for will read like:
Code:
OPEN JAWS/ROUND TRIPS/CIRCLE TRIPS
FARES MAY BE COMBINED ON A HALF ROUND TRIP BASIS
     ...(snipped)...

     PROVIDED -
       COMBINATIONS ARE WITH ANY O-/Q-/N-/S-/V-/L-/M-/K-/
H-/B-/Y-/T-/R-/W- TYPE FARES FOR CARRIER QF IN ANY
       RULE IN THIS TARIFF.
       COMBINATIONS ARE WITH ANY IS1JK/IS2JK/IXMASK/IFKYK/
       I90JK/I50JK/I21JK/IJK/D10JK/DSJK/CFJK/JFJK/IGV2JK
TYPE FARES FOR CARRIER QF IN ANY RULE IN THIS
       TARIFF.

In the example above, the relevant bit of information is fares may be combined on a half round-trip basis (i.e. if it's a round trip fare, you can combine both Fare 1 and Fare 2 by taking half of each of the fares) provided the other fare is either:
  • a QF Economy or Premium Economy fare (hence the mention of OQNSVLMKHBY or TRW-type fares), or
  • it's being combined with any one of the mentioned QF I-class fare bases (Discounted Business).
However, it does look like none of the combinable I-class fare bases are currently offered for sale, which is why the agent said you cannot travel Economy there & Business back in one fare as that would require two different round-trip fares to be combined subject to the rules above. These are the I-class fares currently offered between Sydney and Tokyo on QF:
  • I21JB
  • I21JM
  • I21JS
  • IJB
  • IJM
  • IJS
