For full flights you can only hope your status is enough to get you a reasonable seat.

In reality it's no different to what's offered by the Quick-Check Consoles.

Not just full flights that experiences this phenomenom. Very empty flights for small a/c may have lots of seats blocked for balance purposes. Not uncommon for me to be first to check in on a fairly empty prop flight and be given the choice of the seat pre-allocated or nothing else.
