Qantas pilots and the new PA announcements

One of the options mentioned as part of the industrial campaign.
Persoanlly I wouldn't want Union issues being addressed via the PA, just a bad reflection on the company as a whole not just management.

Hmm - I would think that the pilots are busy enough readying the aircraft for a safe take off and flight rather than reading out their agendas. If they did this then I would hope that management provide the FAs with a response to read shortly after. I would be complaining to QF about this if it happened.

Well with a recent trip to the USA coming up, I would rather an announcement than a full blown pilot's strike.

We all know that the engineers and pilots feel frustrated regarding the present situation. And that maybe they are trying to take action that does not inconvenience customers too much. (Maybe?) However the recent action of the two unions does seem rather childish, and inappropriate to me.
Left handed work, playing the Last Post, and now union announcements on the PA.
Actions like this damage the brand, and may lead to job losses, as people choose to travel with airlines other than Qantas.

Same! I've been planning my trip for 12 months, and I'd hate for something to screw it up at the last minute...

No,

their beef with with QF management, not QF customers. Making customers involved more than they have to be is a good way to lose customers, and thus have the company go under.

Well, it seems this is planned as part of the IA.

However, it may not have been supposed to commence until Friday.

Qantas says pilots to take action

... pilots will take industrial action from Friday, the airline says....

... it would include pilots making in-flight announcements, which AIPA said would be brief and positive. ...
- perhaps the PIC was having a dress rehearsal.

No,

their beef with with QF management,.

Disagree.

QF have decided to attack the pilots in public using false claims (apparently). Only fair the pilots are given an opportunity to respond. The fact that it doesn't impact on safety is fine by me. Captive market is a bonus!

Are Qantas making announcements on board the aircraft to the captive audience? I dont believe so. I dont have to listen to Alan Joyce in the news but on board over the PA (which stops the IFE) I have to listen to anything the pilots say. Frankly I am not interested in either side's point of view.

They shouldn't, but if you're thinking that your about to be unemployed you might also think you don't have much to loose.

So the strike according to the website is to lock in the salaries of pilots for the next 3 years.

Wouldn't make a difference if qantas closed shop tho.

Maybe they should take a leaf out of the engineers book and play the last post, maybe not!

All this is going to do is annoy the passengers. Everyone has problems - we all want job security, we all want a pay rise, but we don't take our fight our on the customer (or whoever you deal with). Getting the public onside won't change managements stance - they know most customers will support the passengers. Taking your fight to the passengers like this just seems childish - the passengers are not the ones who will give you the deal you want.

They can do what they want, but people flying Qantas wont' really care and it won't change a thing. It is those flying Jetstar and Tiger that are causing the problem. They just want the cheapest airfare, and if you want that you are not going to get Qantas pilots who are paid a premium.

No problem with a tactful announcement made when safe to do so. Industrial action that doesn't harm the customers is always good for all involved.

At the very least it is a safety valve that lets off a bit of steam and can help refocus the parties involved on the real matters in hand.

Interesting to read the anti-union arguments here. Management has responsibilities in the relationship and cannot sit back and denigrate their workers. Ultimately they have to work together at the end of the day.

Also the workers, i.e. union members have to face the public before, during and most importantly after any industrial action. Therefore they do have an interest in ensuring they make their point without ruining the client base. Sometimes I wonder if management has the same desire?

Advice for the pilots union? Get a decent webmaster. That site is pathetic, I want to read more than one paragraph before I have to change pages.

I find it quite acceptable that a pilot let his pax know of the industrial dispute and the reasons why. If AJ has his way you may not hear an Australian accent from the coughpit any time soon.

Or would those against this option that the pilots have decided to carry out prefer that the pilots just don't turn up to work?

I find the Qantas pilots and their abilities the best thing going for the airline.
