Qantas Plans OneWorld Superterminal at Sydney

ery few - the most obvious one - John Fitzgerald Kennedy, JFK; nearby I found Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, LGA.; maybe Washington Dulles - IAD
Dulles is a suburb name, like the names used for many European airports (MXP, FCO, etc).

But there are plenty of others named after people in the US - MCO (Mccoy - for Orlando), MSY (Moisant) for New Orleans. But both of those are very old before any current conventions.

I went looking for examples where the code reflects the 'name' of the airport' versus the location In this case, Nancy Bird Walton.

Very few - the most obvious one - John Fitzgerald Kennedy, JFK; nearby I found Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, LGA.; maybe Washington Dulles - IAD

Also Paris Charles De Galle CDG

Were these exceptions due to strong representations from the country in involved? Its apparently not convention or generally allowed.

Sure but it’s New York JFK/LGA
Paris CDG / Orly etc

It’s the fact WSI has something before “Sydney” that breaks convention, not that Sydney is omitted from the code (although possibly that too)

JFK used to be IDL - Indlewood - named after the old golf course it displaced. It’s one of the very rare examples of an airport changing its IATA code.

Brisbane Archerfield - ACF
Sydney Bankstown - BWU

The convention of requiring the major city name included in the name is more recent.

Under that 'convention' , Sydney's second airport 'Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton)' might have been NBW (its available) :)

Obviously IATA don't want current Generalissimos trying to immortalise themselves with airport names and then getting a code.

But, then there is ECP, NW Florida Beaches

ECP – Everyone Can Party – Panama City, Florida
Opened in 2010, Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport had their eyes set on IATA code TFB, standing for “The Florida Beaches” only to find out that a small airport in Papua New Guinea already laid claim to the three-letter ID. Airport officials went down the list of available codes and selected ECP, “Everyone Can Party” for attracting spring and summer revellers.

Pretty sure the “L” in London Luton Airport (LTN) isn’t for London. Scary, it’s actually closer to central London than WSI is to Sydney CBD!

I see others have addressed this, but DOH screens international transfers (ie everybody!) and its the smoothest security you'll get.
They don’t actually screen all transits at DOH.
They have random airports that are assessed as being safe (not a static list) and if you are on a flight from one of these you pass through directly into the airport during transit. From the gate to airside.
No screening done at all.

EDIT My experience is flying various QR transits. No idea if other airlines included in this arrangement at DOH.

Ah, interesting thanks. Done ADL-DOH-xx_ maybe 4 or 5 times - never been in the 'safe' basket :) The others, LAX, CAI, IKA, TUN, JFK maybe understandable.

I wonder why they do that? Maybe a method of 'surge control' when they get very busy with arrivals.

Australia really downplays its airport names. Is Kingsford Smith even on the signage? Not even on google maps, and in my experience if people are going to call it something other than Sydney, it's Mascot.

I used to hear Eagle Farm a lot growing up for Brisbane, but that's a term you rarely hear these days. (Though Eagle Farm is an awesome name for an airport, IMO)

And I used to hear Kingsford Smith a lot when growing up in Sydney.
Still do but usually just “the airport” - that’ll have to change.

If asked, I’d probably 50/50 say KSA or Mascot.

It's actually not available - it's the code for Leeward Point Field - aka Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Probably don't want to be associated with that airport!

Enough people say Mascot that most train drivers have to tell people not to get off whenever they pass through Mascot station (and they had to rename the station to Mascot Suburban)

Who speaks directly to train drivers? Or more interestingly, how do you speak to a train driver on the job - shortly before being arrested? 😳

No, “Mascot“ station is still just “Mascot” last time I looked. But I guess no difference to taking the freeway exit to “Tullamarine” and not finding an airport (let alone anything marine like).

They make announcements. Do you not use trains in Sydney?

And this is your view of the station from the train:

Sure it's officially just still Mascot, but you wouldn't know that from the signs on the platform.

Regularly but I try and avoid the airport tax… Besides, the stations are clearly label “airport” on the maps, apps, departure boards and onboard most trains.

The issue is coming from the city you hit Mascot first, and a lot of people were getting off. It was happening, it was a problem, that's why they changed it. I'm not making this up.

I agree, I travel to Mascot regularly. Even after they added "suburban" to the signs, it's common to reach the top of the escalator and find a bewildered tourist looking confused as they can't see the airport terminal. You have to send them back down to get the train 1 or 2 more stops ...

Or point them to the right bus stop and tell them they'll save $15 and only get there 5-15mins later (depending on Dom or Int) 🤣:p
Or walk - I took the bus from Mascot on Sunday afternoon but the driver advised us to disembark after 1 stop as we were stuck in traffic bound for Domestic which was backed up all the way to Bourke Road...
