QANTAS Platinum one - might not be going ahead

my 2 cents ...

I am LTG with QFF. I travel with 2 bags normally, my personal stuff and work kit in normal sized hard case samsonite luggage.

Now QF will only allow me to travel with one bag up to 32kg or DJ will allow me 32kg across a number of bags. My total weight is not more than 32kg normally and I am happy to pay if there is more.

QF can get stuffed. Between the baggage issue, DJ's status match (which I have done) and the add ons they include I will fly DJ from now on.

Rumour has it there will be a change to the checked baggage policy for QF elites in October.

I am in favour of having the Platinum One tier shelved. Qantas currently has five tiers of membership including the invite only status, Chairman's Lounge. I can see no real advantage in introducing yet another tier which could potentially result in the current Platinum level being devalued further in order to emphasize the benefits of the new elite status.

I believe a better solution would be to offer Chairman's Lounge membership to the very top frequent flyers who attain 3,600+ status credits in 1 membership year provided they are achieved entirely on Qantas operated flights (no code shares on One World partners). It would eliminate the need for a unnecessary new tier and prevent the so called 'American Airlines Y-Upp fare' brigade, who earn vast amounts of status credits for a significantly reduced outlay, from achieving this status. Furthermore, I do not believe the serenity and refined atmosphere of the Chairman's Lounge would be compromised by the aforementioned suggestion as I doubt there would be that many frequent flyers who attain 3,600+ status credits by purely flying on Qantas operated flights.

Qantas should be, in my opinion, looking at improving the current Platinum tier so that it is competitive with Virgin Velocity's equivalent status. I think Qantas should also increase the requirements for the number of Qantas sectors on which one must fly in order to attain Platinum. My suggestion would be 8 sectors, which matches that required by Virgin in their frequent flyer programme.

So if Platinum One still goes ahead and as it is a much higher tier is there really any comparison with VA Platinum?

For me the proof in the pudding will be for QF to actually provide some enhancements to Platinum status and not what is offered for Platinum One.

I agree.

Some good points, also.

Excellent post mw331. It seems to me that QF have a great resource in the Chairman's Lounge, which would not be devalued by opening it up to members who put in 3, 4 or 5k status credits all on Qantas metal.

I have another 12 flights booked on QF between now and P1 announcement and depending on the value of the P1 proposition, I mY be taking my first VA flight shortly after

I can confirm details are being announced in October with launch soon after and definitely prior to Christmas (this year!). We will be launching details of our upgrades changes in October also.

Brilliant, my membership year expires end of September....

That was my thought as well. Totally agree.

I don't fly enough (and don't want to fly enough, to be honest) to earn 3,600SCs, so whether WP1 goes ahead or not doesn't concern me. For me, it's a choice between QF Platinum and VA Platinum, and the VA partner program benefits push it above QF for me at the moment.

Rejigging the mythical WP1 won't change that, they may have to look at FP (Forgotten Platinum) as well.
