Qantas Points Auction

Given this first auction has a retail value of $3k started at 50K points and currently sitting at 1.2M (+1 pont) I will be interested to see tomorrow's auction with a claimed retail value of over $50k finishes at. I may have to log in and see if I can open tomorrow's bidding just to say I had a crack. Today's auction seems like a charity auction as you know you are paying to much however the money and this case points, is of little or no consideration ;):p:p. For the record I am not the highest bidder.

I'm afraid that barely half an hour in, and the Queenstown holiday is already at 1.8 million points!!

An hour in and it's at 2,150,000 - well beyond my meagre points balance. Another publicity stunt where only the rich benefit.

I will point out that this number of points would get you 7 round the world trips in business class. If I had the points, I'd be choosing 7 times round the world rather than 3 nights accommodation, but that's me. How many round the world trips in business will it actually go for?

$50,000 for 3 nights accommodation and couple meals (drinks not included). Really.........really!!!

As I posted up thread I did log in this morning and had a crack, I was leading the charge for around 10 minutes ;):p
I was totally gonna do that too, but as it was an hour in, when I went to bid, the opportunity had well passed my ability to make a bid.

I think its QF that benefit. There are a few points rich fools out there, but hard to see any benefit from trashing points!

Things slowing down with last bid 2,152,000 points, so at least two fools.

Ade you suggesting a vendor bid or man in the tree bid?! lol
lol. I was only thinking .. I mean, it's not entirely impossible for QF to inflate a bid ... after all the whole point of this auction exercise is to reduce the points liability ...

Besides, QF could, in theory, "give" points to it's employees and masquerade them as "bidders" .... there's a lot of gaps in this ...

Re : rich business owners with points - yea, that's true too. I mean, those that have ridiculously large $ spend, 2 Mil points might not seem big .. but the "worth" of 2 mil points for a holiday in Queenstown, is not justifiable ... it's not my place to "justify" what's being doing or even try and find justification .. but to me, personally, it seems the going prices for the items on offer in this auction isn't fair ... or it doesn't really add up ... again, not my place to say, just thinking out loud :D

I have this image of that Bond movie where James Bond bids hundreds of thousands of pounds on a Faberge egg to see how desperate the other bidder is to get it and the Government bloke going nuts at him if he won the auction on an essentially fake bid.

yes, I need to get out more (if only I could!) :D

I think the people who are bidding usually spend their points on vouchers or toasters.
For example, if you compare it against this
You could maybe buy 4 and a half 55" TVs worth $2800 each (486,780 points)

Think they all need to sign up for Matt Graham's course!!!

I can see a lot of companies that accrue points for spends and things bidding on this as a reward for their staff somehow. Like then auction it off internally, or get people to donate like a raffle.

3mil now o_O

Shall we start placing bets on what the charted Dash-8 will go for?

Would make for an incredible workplace end of year function. Perhaps 4mil?

One thing I'd point out now that is very subtly listed in the auction site that I suspect may interest some followers are the other opportunities to use the points. In particular, for those who say QF points are only good for a toaster, well we've now got 25% off them! Even if you're a kettle you'll score a similar deal:

oh I suspect the Dash8 (which would be fun tbh!) to go for well more than 4m.. I could honestly see 10m to whoever has those to burn. I absolutely will be following that one with great interest.

And honestly this is one of those money can't buy type things - well OK money CAN buy a charter of course but I mean for regular people or small groups or whathave you it's an unusual thing to bid on and an experience for sure you could really make a great thing for a small company or group to have a lot of fun with and could be worth it.

You'd love to hear how the winner makes use of it too :)

Now at 3.65M points, I am officially out of the running as there is note telling me I do not have enough points to did on the auction. Guess I will just have to cash in my points for OW J or F awards flights or a bucket load of toasters, kettles, TVs, Apple devices etc ;):p Edit. For the record outside of my 10 minutes of leading the push this morning I have not been in the bidding.

Randomly selected date in November shows a one way flexible ANY SEAT award from Brisbane to Hamilton Island as 60,700 pts.

30 people return equates to 3.642 million. Little over 6 million if you fill an entire 50 seat Q300.

I understand that if you actually booked in this way the later tickets would be much more than the earlier ones but I think it shows how good this auction will be for QF.

Well yes I did do the maths after I posted and OK 5m is probably more reasonable.. but given the "I want" factor and the results we have seen so far.. I would not at all be surprised if it went higher.

will be fun to see on Friday! :D
