Think you've hit the nail on the head here, as to why they can get away with it.

Warning - rant ahead. 6.60 is quite a hefty charge on the smaller fares (1 way MEL-SYD it represents 5.2% of purchase price). I don't buy the BS that they're underrecovering the credit card fees - TOUGH - it is a cost of doing business. Can you imagine if all those last minute purchases that couldn't be made by BPAY had to paid for by cash or cheque - I am sure the cost of managing all this would far outweigh the cost of credit card merchant fees.
Not so - in order to pay by cash or cheque, you would need to go to the airport or a travel centre, and then you would get hit with a $27.50 charge instead of the CC fee.

I agree with you though, it is part and parcel of doing business, and they really should wear the fees and build it into the base price, since so very few passengers actually go down the Bpay option (and how long will that be free for?)

I suspect that it will maintain being free so that they can show that it is possible to buy the ticket for the listed price.

Before QF had credit card fees listed separately, they used to charge a credit card surcharge anyway, they used to hide the surcharge within the displayed fare on the site; buying from a travel centre in cash, for example, the cost was reduced since they did not include the surcharge

Don't fool yourselves, my deep pocketed travel friends, you must pay the credit fee PLUS the booking fee if you do business over the phone or in person - thus it is effectively $33.50 ($27.50 booking fee plus $6 credit card fee).

The equivalent for international is $68.00 ($50 + $18).

Welcome to the rip off airline with nice big profits and nice big executive bonuses.

Oh dear, it's just the cost of doing business...coughola.

Actually, organisations are only supposed to charge financial transaction fees on a cost recovery basis. One day the ACCC or someone with some legal muscle will bring a test case to put all airlines, banks etc that over-charge for fees on notice.
