Qantas reduces Emirates carrier charges

Well, not to labour the point, but with "Qantas follows suit", the heading now reads as though 'Emirates reduces carrier charges on rewards and Qantas reduces carrier charges on rewards'.
I can change it to “Emirates Skywards reduces award fees” but then the thread would be better suited to the EK forum, not the QF forum. The fact this thread is related to what Qantas FF has done after EK did something means the thread title should point to the topic of the thread. Feel free to send me a conversation if you wish to discuss further.

do we think this is partly why they have no availability for J for next year because they were planning on overhauling ?

I definitely saw EK J availability when I recently searched for FRA and ZRH.

PER-xSIN-xDXB-CMN with QF Y and EK F and F, $261.49 on a classic award.

PER-xDXB-CMN with EK in F and F, $428.39 on a classic award.

What the reason for the significant difference?

SYD-DXB-ZRH return in EK J still carries AUD659 in carrier charges. No thanks, will book with CX instead.

It's most likely because the sum of the individual carrier charges on PER-SIN (on QF) and SIN-DXB (on EK) are lower than the sum of the charges on PER-DXB (EK). Doesn't make sense, but not much does when it comes to carrier charges.

Believe it or not, that's a huge improvement. The carrier charges on that itinerary used to be ~$1,185, and that's before the real taxes.

Yep I know. QR and BA are also egregious in this regard. It's so annoying as I do enjoy the EK experience in general and would love to try QR.

Has there been a change to this in recent weeks? In May, I booked F from Christchurch to Melbourne (via Sydney) with taxes of $83.80NZD. Today the same booking has charges of $136.40NZD. There has been recent tweaking to the points and fees, but I didn't this this came in effect until September.

This seems to moving again. Today fees are listed in red below. Are the Qantas charges for partners departing AU usually in a fixed AU amount?

It seems to be true, and Qantas seems to be passing on the lower Emirates carrier charges.

There are some examples of previous Emirates carrier surcharges as of October 2019 here: List of Emirates Carrier Charges

Comparing those amounts with what is showing now on a couple of different routes:
  • SYD-DXB in Y: Was $148.40, now $76.50 $165.68
  • SYD-DXB in F: Was $370.90, now $229.50 $308.88
  • DPS-DXB in F: Was $666, now $115 $131 (converted)

No, they fluctuate slightly with the exchange rate. (Although, some of those changes cannot be explained by exchange rates alone.)

It looks like this may have been a blip. Carrier charges are back down again today, e.g. SYD-CHC in F is now $28.30 (plus other taxes). SYD-DXB in Y is $70.70 and in F is $211.90, as of now.

Hmmm....well something is different. In May, I booked CHC to MEL in F/J, and the total fees were 83.80NZD Per person. Today it’s 136.40NZD. Not a deal breaker, just unexpected/unexplained.
