Qantas replaces Emirates on most Trans Tasman flights

It occurs to me that due to some changes in my family (mum moving to Oz) I will be traveling far less often to AKL .
However CHC still seems like a good idea for the odd weekend escape to the SI, so all is not completely lost :-)

Well there's always LAN SYD-AKL on 787-9, which you can book as QF321/322.

I wonder if AA has any interest in flying LAX-AKL-MEL? Might help make LAX-AKL more sustainable.

Except it isn’t an A380, it isn’t at a convenient time,it isn’t EK, and It doesn't have a Bar. Otherwise it’s the same (lol].

Well it's better than a domestic config A330.

Personally I love flying the 787-9. And I'm not a big fan of EK J.

I think the poin5 of the thread is the loss of EK A380. So it’s fairly academic what a domestic A330 is better or worse than.
I like EK J. I like EK F even more. Being relegated to 737 “Jit Connict” is a poor second option. So the A330 is the lesser of two evils IMHO.

Those fun F runs will be a bit harder now. Depending on timings this should ease congestion on the EK lounge which has been the subject of some discussion here.

But surely the LAN B787-9 is the lesser of three evils?

If this is an EK grieving thread I'll let you be. But it's in the QF forum, not EK, so figured it could include alternative options for QF frequent flyers now EK isn't flying the route.

I guess economics are at play? What was the utilisation on these routes (in economy)?

I'm sad to see the BNE-AKL option gone. I just flew this as a bucket list tick last week from AKL to BNE and soaked up all the F experience I could! Since I had arrived from SCL that morning, I hung around the QF "Invitation only" lounge until EK lounge opened. Then had my first ever Dom Perignon, shower on board, napped for an hour and, went to the bar, then sampled the main course even though I was still full of lounge food. I even scored a ladies amenity kit by asking nicely. It was my first and probably only F class experience (I have had quite a few J class over the last 8 years) and it was awesome!

Why would anyone want to fly on the 789? I would select any other currently built widebody over the 787...

Also, the QF PR website (aka Ausbt) rates LA J as the worst widebody option to AKL as well.

The EK A380 is my usual TT choice from BNE and I will certainly miss this service.

I cannot see QF putting an A330 on the BNE-AKL route

Highly subjective, depends on the airline and the route. Well, even more than that, depends on the config.

The aircraft itself is very smooth and quiet.

I've never flown LAN. But I've flown BA 789 in J and really liked it.

As mentioned elsewhere what does this mean for the future of the EK AKL lounge, and any possible (much needed) refurbishment of the QF lounges

One other sad aspect is that CI that was providing additional competition across the Tasman has reduced its flights to (if I recall) only an offering from BNE, and it was flying (for instance) A333s from MEL.

EK still flies AKL-DXB. Hopefully their lounge stays.

As reported in the NZHerald
From March 2018, Emirates to cut MEL/BNE-AKL flights with QF to take up the slack.

Highlights
  • EK/QF partnership/codeshare to continue
  • EK to continue operating SYD-CHC-SYD with an A380
  • EK to cut MEL-AKL-MEL / BNE-AKL-BNE
  • QF to introduce new daily MEL-AKL-MEL (QF159 MEL-AKL dep 1045 arr 1620 / QF158 AKL-MEL dep 1200 arr 1415)
  • QF to introduce extra 2 weekly BNE-AKL-BNE flights
  • Some existing QF services to be upgauged from the B738 to the A330

The 330 replacing the 737 is a very good thing, but the loss of the earning more SC in EK F will be a hard thing to let go, also access to the MEL EK lounge, so sad.
Will be harder to retain QF SG now, with so many lesser TT flights carrying an F class, and thus less earnings of 120 QF SC.
Thanks for the news tip though.

Bugger Brus. coughpy 737 from BNE with one a330 a day, no F, no A380, coughpy QF lounge in AKL, coughpy QF wine and food...

Not happy Alan.

Don't know how that is Alan's fault if EK decide to pull out...
Qantas made the announcement as part of the EK / QF relationship. And on the Q flights I’ve been on in Y and J they aren’t exactly the best I’ve had.
