Hi there,

I have to go back to the US in late Oct 2011. I will be taking my wife with me. I was looking at Y+ on QF from BNE to LAX as I just travelled back in Y+ and we also did SYD - JHB - SYD in Y+ on QF and are happy enough with the product.

2 questions ...

1. how does Y+ on QF compare to Virgin Australia's Y+ product?

2. at the moment there is a $1000 price difference in the ticket price QF to Virgin Aust. It would be nice to know if QF are going to have a sale on Y+ to the West Coast of the US anytime soon. Is there any 'schedule' or typical timings for these sorts of sales.

our travel period will be around the 22nd of Oct to the 2nd week of November - so not too much of a peak period I would have thought (increasing the likelihood of a sale on seats?)

Thanks in advance.

Some points:
  • Qantas and Virgin Australia have exactly the same seat pitch and recline in Y+, Virgin is slightly wider (0.5 inch)
  • Qantas is regarded as the third best Y+ in the world by Skytrax (Virgin Australia was not in the top three)
  • Virgin Australia is regarded as having the best service in the pacific region by Skytrax (Qantas was not in the top three)
  • Virgin Australia is regarded as having the third best Y+ meal service in the world by Skytrax (Qantas was not in the top three)
  • Virgin Australia has a boutique onboard bar exclusively for Y+ passengers
  • Qantas has self serve snack area exclusively for Y+ passengers (currently only on A380 services to my knowledge)
  • Virgin Australia has a larger IFE AVOD touch screen at 10.6 inches wide (Qantas is 8.4 inches wide)
  • All Virgin Australia services have sky interiors (cabin changes colours throughout flight) As do Qantas A380 services
So In my honest opinion, they both have their benefits and are both equally good products and hence Qantas is not worth $1000 more per person. Save the money, and use it towards a nicer hotel.

Here is the Virgin Australia virtual cabin which is found on their website, as you haven't been with them before - V australia

Having used both QF & VA for Y+ I would suggest that you save the $1,000. There are a lot of reviews & comments on this site that you can find via a search.
