It would depend on what seats they chose.

Whilst there is free seat selection for NB who book direct they would be less popular seats near the back (the 8 may need to split into pairs), but they still offer better seats at a cost. Maybe they picked seats not available for free to NBs.

If they picked a extra legroom or preferred seat(s) whuch QF normally charge for then it would be correct. It also identifies these during the booking/selection steps.

If just normal seats then potentially an error.

SYD-MNL is probably A330 for the dates. QF have a nice little rort going for Row 30 which is the first row presented to an NB (it is actually the eighth row in economy) is a "preferred" seat that they charge for "to be closer to the front to disembark earlier".

My bet is that they have selected these seats (which are not extra leg room at all) blindly as the most forward they could see - and been charged for the privilege. Agree that it does indicate that they will be charged for.

have just confirmed they took row 46 and 47. Underwhat situation would this be a 45 charge per seat? Possible that when he selected seats he wasnt logged in, then at checkout logged in to use points + pay?

As someone who gave up on QF due to high cost/low value and dropped from P1 to WP in June, I flew my first flight since April with QF today BNE-AKL on a beat up old A332. It was the first time I had encountered these new fees.

At T-80, QF wanted to charge me (as a WP) AUD35 to select 23D, E, F, G (the middle seats of the first row in Y) as an 'extra legroom seat'. These seats do not have extra legroom. In fact, I'd argue 23A&B and 23J&K are ten times better (albeit bassinet) and they do not charge WPs for them.

If WPs are being forced to pay for coughpy seats I'd hate to think what any lower status is being slugged.

Am I right when reading about these new fees that row 4 on 737s cannot be selected by anyone now (except P1s and CLs) without paying??? What a joke.

Oh, and here is my seat today. Worth paying extra for??

You are right regarding selecting a seat in Row 4 on B737.

As for the condition of that seat - an absolute disgrace and Ms Hudson should be ashamed!

A friend in bronze has booked a sale fare for 4 people via Qantas app and has been charged for seating. I have gone over the conditions and this seems to be incorrect, based on the below link. Am i missing something? $360 for 8 seats for the return trip SYD-MNL.

Did your friend end up getting a response from Qantas on this? This has also happened to us for our flight this month. I called Qantas multiple times and they weren't very helpful in resolving this issue.

I've booked a MEL-PER domestic (>QF400) flight for later this year which is showing on a 787-9 dreamliner.

Do the PE seats become available closer to departure, and is there a fee??

Are you booked in economy or PE? I'd assume PE seats would only be available to people booked on PE fare (assuming they are selling that on a domestic route?), otherwise only accessible via the usual upgrade process.

It's not really that strange. QF don't file PE fares for domestic because there are so few flights offering this cabin (this rogue MEL-PER is one flight per week iirc as a positioning flight). It's a bit like when QF has often put the A380 on the HKG route and often not sold F, but the same deal applies that J pax with status can preallocate. At T-80 the seats can potentially open up. Probably the same with PE on this domestic flight as they are basically being treated like preferred status seats in the cabin booked (in this case, Y).

Would seem something went awry in the booking process
or
As mentioned above chargeable Y Seats were chosen without realising the cost would be added.

As an NB IMG_3676.png

There are some free seat selection opportunities but like WPs discovered not all seats are FrREE

So I did a dummy booking and There are at least 3 prompts along the booking process

Two to tell you it’s complimentary if you log in

Then it makes it clear what the pricing per seat will be IMG_3680.png

That makes sense then. I suppose I was just surprised that QF would forego the opportunity to upsell PE seats for revenue to regular Y passengers (like VA Economy X for example). The effort required to add that as a feature probably wouldn’t be justified given how few flights it would apply to, like you say.

But went to all the effort of creating tables with SC and QFF point earning. Bit half baked, but thanks! Will try a few days out to snag a seat further forward 😁
