Qantas Staff Class - the new Business Class cabin

Interested to know this too. I was once asked if I was QF staff by an FA paxing from PER-SYD who sat beside me. I did know two of the FA's working the J cabin from previous trips. The verbal exchanges were jovial and the FA's called me by first name but other than that I can't work out how that happened.

Something to do with layers obviously :D
 
In my recent experiences there are less Qantas staff in business class.

And yes this topic comes up a lot. We all have our opinion on the matter and there is no right or wrong.

What does a Qantas staff member look like?
IME easily spotted on a B737 - they get their main meal served last, and out of order. Qantas meal service is from front to back on a B737, so - anyone who gets a tray placed in front of them, but no main meal placed on it at the same time, is on discounted "staff" travel (but may not be Qantas staff specifically). Harder to spot at row 3, as the CSM may adjust the serving pattern based on the side of the plane which the "non-revs" are sitting. After serving row 3, the CSM then makes their way back up the aisle, serving main meals to all the "non-revs" (i.e. all those with empty spots on their trays), based on a choice of what ever may be left over.

Same service to those with "Catering Not Assured" on BP though isn't it ?
 
Now, I used to see paying customers in Business class, but these days play a game " spot the qantas employee" in business class. It is very easy, they dont wear uniforms but it is so easy to identify them. I wonder why qantas staff rank above passengers when it come to business class. Why are those seats not being offered as points upgrade seats to passengers?

There are many cases where Qantas are required to fly staff in Business when the travel is work related, as this is mandated under the EBA.

I believe I've seen pilots in the J cabin quite a lot.

Recently on a domestic flight, J was full and two pilots sat in the first row of Y and ate J class meals. The meal tray could barely fit on the armrest tray table.. Was quite the balancing act.

I think if QANTAS management and staff were to Y travel more often they would get a better idea of the QANTAS offering in Y and understand thier customers Y experience better.

I think if QANTAS management and staff were to Y travel more often they would get a better idea of the QANTAS offering in Y and understand thier customers Y experience better.

I suspect they know whats it like thus the big marketing push for frequent flyer status, premium economy and higher, and carrots like upgrades.
 
It is the same for Jetstar staff duty travel travelling QANTAS from recent trips I have been on.

Yes it is.

Although I believe that JQ staff should be flying JQ when on duty travel.

After all - they are separate airlines.
 
My Qantas FA friends tell me they search and book last minute on a day when most J seats are available, but have lost out on a number of occasions past months long haul due to pesky award seat users :)
 
I don't mind staff of any airline flying in J when on duty travel (e.g. Pre-positioning to operate the next sector or another sector or going straight into the sim). I dislike it when that travel (regardless of which airline) is staff travel for leisure and bumps a paying j or F passenger, which happened to me in the US twice.

I daresay if they are in uniform, cut them some slack, as they might just be operating your next connecting flight!
