I recently travelled to USA on Qantas (SYD-LAX-BOS-JFK-LAX-SYD) in J class (first time on QF). I was QFF silver member at that time, Gold now after USA trip ! On my return leg I was unexpectedly upgraded from business to First class at LAX airport boarding gate, my boarding pass was changed and she handed over a new F boarding pass stating with a big smile " As you are loyal Qantas customer we have upgraded you to First class" Overall this was great experience as I was flying J class for the first time on QF (have flown J on SQ before). My question is I was only credited status credits for J class and same for points (including J class cabin bonus for FF points). I did ring QFF customer care who said status credits are only credited for the class you have paid your ticket in my case J class so I was only entitled to J class status credit and cabin bonus for FF miles. Is this the case? Can anyone clarify please ! Thanks in advance.

Welcome to AFF

Your upgrade was the only bonus you get. Nice upgrade BTW :-)

Many thanks, yes it was nice upgrade for 14 hour flight LAX-SYD in First class that too I am not very high "status" Qantas customer. Not sure why they have upgraded me ahead of others (ie Gold/Platinum members), I knew Y was oversold so this probably was an "operational upgrade" but it I feel I was lucky to get upgraded from J to F on first QF J flight :D

I booked PE on LAX-MEL once and got upgraded to J since they switched from the A380 to the 747, and I was credited with Business Class points and SCs.

After 17 years of elite flying I can assure all that the awarding of SC/Points in relation to the op-upped cabin is the 'exception' rather than the 'rule'.

It may happen, although unlikely and good luck to you if it does ...

When I was lucky to receive an upgrade, I got Points and SC as originally ticketed. QF is very good in that. Even "Upgrade" shows in your activity statement.

I got rare cases on other airlines, where I got points of the upgraded class.

I got quite a few cases, where I got no points, because the upgrade booked into an award bucket.
With QF it was sorted out in a few days, other airlines take much longer for that (my record is LH with 12 months and several letters and emails).

If you buy an upgrade, you will receive the points of the upgraded class. Especially BA is very good in selling upgrades - up until the checkin. I upgraded for a few hundered bucks SIN-LHR from J to F. I was young and needed the SCs, but the experience was great and worth every cent!

Is it correct that you do get the upgraded SC's and points if you do a points upgrade?

On QF, no. Not to say it has never happened, but under the T&Cs it shouldn't, and while there may have been the odd 'mistake' situation where it has happened, the answer is still no. :-|

I recently applied for an upgrade using points on a flight from SIN to SYD and did not receive any notification, but at the airport had been upgraded to Y+.

When the flight appeared on my activity report it ONLY showed Premium Economy SIN to SYD... and 0 0 0 for all values.

I don't want to complain, because no points were deducted... but I was keen to get those SC's... is it worth ringing to ask? Or is there a chance that at this stage (2 months later) they'd still deduct the points?

Would be curious to know anyone's experience on this.

Thanks!

I would ring, sounds like an op up!

Call, this is not an uncommon occurrence and it generally means the standard procedure for an op-up was done incorrectly.

They generally fix it on the spot.

Posted on a wing and a prayer ...

Oh boo.

They said "oops we made an error... we'll deduct those points right away"

When I said "really, two months later?" they said their reports are behind and they are calling people as they deduct points.

Boooo!

Dude - call them back and say "listen, i applied for it, but i never received any confirmation, and the lady at the airport was kind enough to upgrade me and said nothing about points..."

Fight for it if you care about it that much :)

I got upgraded at the gate a couple of years ago on the LAX to MEL. Only got credit for the original booking. Cant complain as you got a free upgrade

Not really free, the OP got no points or SC for the paid fare.

What kind of airfare were you originally booked on? If it was a paid airfare you should have receive SC & points however if it was a Classic Award, that would not have earned points.

Sounds like rubish to me
Oh dear! I do hope you did not tell them you had an upgrade request in.

It seems it was not a points upgrade from this: "" As you are loyal Qantas customer we have upgraded you to First class"".

Now it may be tougher - but wait until after 9:30am tomorrow and call again - do not mention "the war" (upgrade request), simply state you were operationally upgraded but did not receive any credit for the COS (class of service booked/paid for).
