stryker,

I'd suggest an inquiry back to the screening people is in order. How are people to abide by the rules if they are applied inconsistently :?:

The knives thing fascinates me every time I do a DONE4. Qantas - plakky knives. BA - say LHR to JFK - proper metal knives! I asked an FA about this a couple of years ago and he said that Qantas had purchased enough plastic knives for a decade or two.

It is not a QF requirement it is Australian Govt as all airlines into/out of Oz have that restriction. I believe the restriction on metal knives at lounges in HKG are due to connecting flights to Oz :(

Oh, that it explains it.

My point was not to explain the stupid rule but to flag that the FA was bullsh1tting you as they were probably sick of people complaining about it all the time.

It is a stupid and pointless rule - although some of those metal knives on AA are worse than useless...

But then again you can pop open the catch on quite a few doors with 2 decent knifes. Maybe their worried about that aspect, rather than butter knifes as a weapon.
